“"The Grand" more like "The Mediocre"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2014

Apart from the really nice staff The Grand Hotel dose not live up to its name, from it's worn out carpets to the drafts (& I used draft in the kindest way) coming in the window the Grand is well past it's sell by date. It's time someone took it off the shelf and put it in the trash. You may have a selection of rooms in the grand each coming with its own little bonus and all sharing the same problem. Let's start with the problem "the WIFI" or in the Grands case the lack of. I know I'm not the first person to bring it up & I'm sure I won't be the last but come on people it's 2014, WIFI is a must. If your wifi supplier can not provide a service that reaches all areas of the hotel THEN SACK HIM/HER. It's an old hotel so stone walls, solution ... Hard wire from the modem to wireless routers giving better signal. Take the repeaters out of the plastic boxes and mount them on the ceiling.. Ok.. The food, the mood of the chef will determine the quality of food this is more obvious in the mornings but in general the food is good. Now back to the free bonus' you get with the rooms, if you are in the back you get the hear the clock chiming every 15 mins night & day, if you are on the top floor the water pressure in the shower is shocking . If you are near the night club kiss going to sleep for the weekend goodbye. If you are over the bar you can hear everything going on below and if you are out the front you get all the street noise but on the weekend this noise can be ongoing until after 04:00hrs. So to sum it all up... The front line staff are awesome, the food is ok and after that ........ Disaster....

Thank you for your comments with regards to the Hotel. Please note that refurbishment will start in May. This is to include the public bar and the carpets. With regards to the noise unfortunately these points are out-with our control. The council controls the clock. The noise from the street is due to being a town centre hotel.

its a long time since this place was anything like grand.
with accomodation on shetland straining to meet demand some places seem to feel they shouldn't bother as the business will come anyway. this seems to be the way with the grand hotel.

i have never met a less helpful hotel manager. the company i was working with were putting a lot of business to this hotel and its sister hotel the queens, so i expected a complaint to be properly dealt with.
i complained and got to speak to the manager about my inability to get a shower before work
(almost no water pressure and barely a dribble out of the shower). he actually acknowledged that there was a problem with it but when i suggested that guests be advised of this he seemed disinterested and said that "not everyone likes to have a shower"! i told him he was ignoring the issue, which he was. a complete lack of customer care in my book.

take your business elsewhere if you can. rest assured the rest of the staff had a very nice and helpful manner. the menu read well but due to the hours i was working i was unable to eat either breakfast or an evening meal.

Room Tip: go elsewhere. if you have to stay there, stay at the front to avoid the clock chimes or the back to...

Thank you for your comments. If you are going to quote my conversation with you with regards to the water pressure please could you report the entire conversation and not the bits to make it sound like we do not care. Your comments with regards to the shower pressure have been noted and we are currently working on a solution to the problem.

Went here for lunch to prepare myself for the UHA festival. They had a set menu for the day. Chose the reestit soup as was a local hit. Pretty good, mind you be warned, it is quite salty. That's just the way the dish is made. Fab!!!
Then had the carvery for my main. Wow!! Well done guys. The beef that I opted for was done perfectly, accompanied with usual trimmings. YUUUUUUUMMMMMM!!

Service was casual because I opted for the less formal bar area, so did not expect more. There is a more formal restaurant area if you are looking for that kind of vibe.

Overall!!! Nice. Cheers guys :))

Have been a few times but not for a while. Lovely restaurant and the food was gorgeous. Choice of chicken pork or beef, or a bit of all. Mickey the chef servers and is so friendly. Piles food on your plate. Well worth a visit but go hungry as the portions are huge. Will be back soon

The Grand is an old-fashioned British-style hotel - with all that entails, pros and cons. My room was clean and spacious, bed was comfortable enough. I was lucky to get a room overlooking the harbour. Breakfast was filling, and there is a hotel bar. Location is very good. The stairs will cause difficulties for some, as there is no lift. Service is ok.

I was in Lerwick for business last week and was booked into the Grand. First impression of the hotel was tired and dated but as long as it's clean and warm then I should have no issues.

My room had a high ceiling with what looked like black damp mark in the corner. My bed was comfortable but I had issues with my shower as the water had no pressure and only dripped out of it on the warm setting.

I went for breakfast and my order was taken by the waitress which was ok until I decided to opt for poached eggs instead of scrambled - well at this point she sighed and theatrically ripped the page from her pad threw it onto the floor and with a stern look wrote the order out again before stomping off.

My breakfast did come as I ordered it but the scene she created was terrible.

I did inform the receptionist about for which she apologised.

I know it's mainly workers that stay here in the winter but for the prices being charged I think they are taking things for granted.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel for 4 nights. We arrived off the boat at 7am, and walked from the port to town. I think we surprised the staff by arriving so early, but the ferry does arrive at pretty much the same time very day.

There is no lift, so we had to carry our bags up 3 flights of stairs. No worries for me, but just think what they would do for others who might find it a struggle, as there was no offer of assistance to my travelling companion, and her bag was heavier than mine!

The room was only adequate for the price we paid, but the whole look was very 'tired'. It even had a trouser press! Haven't seen one of them for years! The double bed had seen many a body before us - time for a change there too I think.

The staff were pleasant enough - up for a chat etc. There is a breakfast menu that includes cereal, toast etc, but the cooked breakfast could be improved. A bit lazy really - deep frying the mushrooms and sausages?? I love snags at breakfast, but they do need to be cooked properly.

Its is in a great position - some rooms overlook the port, and right in the town centre. Parking out the back, there are 2 bars ( tried) and even a nghtclub (untried)

Would I stay here again? Maybe for ease of being right in town, but it did not seem great value, seemed in need of a revamp and a bit of love, but the staff were able to appease much of this.

Room Tip: Look out to the port
