“A Lerwick Council Treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

This unexpected attraction is a must for any visitor to The Shetland Isles who likes Architecture / History / or just getting involved with the running of a Local community.
This is the Lerwick Council Town Hall, and will blow your mind.
The Entry looks fantastic.
The Lead-light Windows will make you gasp.
The Main Ballroom upstairs will leave you in awe.
Open during business hours, you will find the staff very helpful.
As I have worked for local Councils all of my life, I can truly appreciate something like this.

“Great Introduction to Lerwick & to Shetland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Having done a quick tour of Fort Charlotte in Lerwick, we walked down a few streets and came to the Town Hall of Lerwick. I was impressed by the stained glass windows and was starting to snap some photos on the outside of the building when a young man who worked at the Town Hall walked out and invited us in, stating that they had just finished some business in the Town Hall and that it was open for visitors. He gave us a quick introduction to the building and then left us to explore it on our own.

The inside of the building is a marvelous collection of stained glass windows and heraldry including a heraldic ceiling inside the main chamber. The building also contains the grant of a flag to Shetland from the Lord Lyon, the Heraldic Authority for Scotland. The artifacts and artistry of the buidling make it a definite stop for visitors and I highly recommend you schedule some time to explore this gem. The friendliess of the Shetland people began with our invitation to view the inside of this building and it continued for the remainder of our tour in Shetland.

As an aside, we met the new Chief Executive of Shetland, Mark Boden at our B&B in Lerwick. He and his wife were very kind and gracious and I wish Mark well in his new role.

“A Victorian Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2012

Unfortunately, the tower was not open that day. However, we had the chance of having a city hall worker explain key features of the main reception room on the second floor.

“Great stained glass windows”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2012

Worth a look, but if you can ask the caretaker to explain some of the background of the many emblems and stained glass windows. Not part of his remit, but he very kindly took time out to share his extensive knowledge with us and it really brought the building to life.
