“tidy and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2011

Julia and Chris arranged me myself stayed in a double-deck room for 4 nights. Very helpful couple of them. Peedie's small but everything's clean and tidy for use. A very comfortable living room with useful info there. Just like a family house. Very good location at the corner of the lake.

Room Tip: kitchen and living room are on 2nd floor.

We stayed at the Peedie for 2 nights while visiting orkney. our couples' room was a bit small but really nice & cozy.
During our stay we had a medical problem, in which Julia & Chris helped us a great deal, and made what could be a terrible experience into a very pleasant stay.
All in all, highly recommended!

Stayed in twin room which was quite cluttered with oversized table and dining chairs. Flat screen tv in room was nice touch but with just one shower/loo for three rooms (prob 6 people) was a bit difficult in the mornings. Separate kitchen and decent lounge in different section of hostel with another bedroom and bathroom attached so you'd have to get dressed in order to use these facilities.

Kept very clean though and kitchen was well equipped. Location right in town so handy for all amenities including tourist info and bus/ferry links.

In hindsight for a few pounds more would have stayed in b and b for better value!

Although it was about 20 years since I last stayed in a hostel, I ended up booking this for one night as decided on a last minute solo trip to orkney and couldn't get 4 nights accomodation in the kirkwall hotel or St. Ola hotel (the other two places I stayed at - see seperate reviews). I entered the place with low expectations and found a very small and basic, but very clean and somehow still cosy room with all required amenities (bunkbeds, washbasin and even an armchair, table and chairs and tv) plus a warm personal welcome note from the owner. Yes, as with most hostels, the building is a bit noisy so if your neighbours get up early or use the facilities at night you do hear it, but at 15 pound per person (or 30 if wanting to be guaranteed of a private room) it was great value for money (especially given that I have paid more than double to sleep in the St. ola hotel tonight and am now seriously bothered by noise from the bars there -see seperate review). Showerroom and kitchen were clean and had all required amenities. So, knowing what I know now, I wished I would have tried to book this for my entire stay in Orkney as I would have slept equally well if not better and could have saved myself a fortune. So in summary: if you are looking for a clean but basic budget option and you don't mind sharing facilities/bunkbeds I would definitely recommend the peedie hostel.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2011

This was my second time staying here (first time in 2008, for 2 nights). This time I stayed for 8 nights. There's been a change in ownership, and several improvements have been made.

There are 2 kitchens available. The one on the first floor is older and very small, but is still well equipped. There's a new, larger kitchen on the second floor (along with a new lounge and dining area that look out over Kirkwall Bay) that is likewise fully equipped, including a laundry washing machine that guests can use (for free). There are no computers available, and no WiFi at this time, but it's something the owner is looking into. There is free parking right next to the hostel.

There are 4 rooms available - one single (private), one 2-person (with bunkbeds), and two 4-person dorms. All rooms have sinks and vanities en suite, but the toilet/shower rooms are separate (one per floor, with one toilet and one shower/tub each). Towels can be found in the cupboard off the first floor kitchen.

Rooms are clean and spacious. The beds and pillows are comfortable, and the bedding clean and warm. No lockers are available, and the rooms could use some additional hooks for hanging up items (these have been purchased and may already be installed).

The hostel location is barely 2 blocks from the Kirkwall bus station, so public transportation is easily accessed. Kirkwall center is also very close - about a 5 minute walk. Several restaurants, pubs, and nightclubs are within easy walking distance. I recommend Dil Se for Indian food, and CafeLolz@21 for its late hours, free WiFi, friendly staff, chai tea latte, and warm chicken salad with cashews. If you need to dry your wet laundry, the Launderama isn't far away either. The dryers are gas-powered, so they take some time to come on line. Don't show up at opening expecting to use the dryers immediately.

Peedie Hostel is an excellent value and I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Email Julia as early as possible with your needs!

This is probably one of the more comfortable hostels I've stayed in. A little hard to find (it was dark and raining at the time though) but the stay was quality and value for money. Didn't get to meet the staff personally, but they were friendly and understanding on the phone (since we booked late) and all the facilities worked. Can't say much for location since we didn't stay in Kirkwall long enough to explore the town but everything seemed to be within walking distance anyway. Overall it was a pleasant, comfortable stay and I would certainly stay there again when I'm in Kirkwall.
