As a fairly regular visitor to Orkney I've sampled a few of the hotels and the Foveran comes up as one of the best overall. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful so full marks there. Rooms are small(ish) but very clean and comfortable. The Foveran markets itself with a strong emphasis on the quality of the food which is good for Orkney but, watch out, it doesn't have much competition. I'm not saying that the food is bad, far from it, but it isn't as good as they think. I had two salads while I was there, both undressed with just a drizzle of dressing over them. A scallop starter at £6.95 which consisted of three small scallops and a few (dry!) salad leaves isn't good value. I think they're catering a lot for the local market which would view the food as good because, as I have said previously, there's no competition. Duck, overcooked; marmalade ice cream, too bitter to go with a very sweet lemon meringue, Orkney fudge cheesecake, good, with the consistency of a mousse. I think you're getting my drift here.
However, don't be put off, try it, you won't find better on Orkney. If the chef from the Foveran reads this, try a little harder to get the detail right, toss the salad, it takes only seconds; duck breast should be pink, leamon meringue sweet and tart etc, etc. Ditch the marmalade ice cream!
