“Fabulous food, lovely site, wish we could have stayed longer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We found this place thanks to other TripAdvisor reviews (and thank you!) and we were sorry to leave. Twin beds instead of a double were all that were available, but we didn't mind. Our room was spotless, cozy, modern, comfortable and quiet. Well appointed (tea, coffee, shortbreads, bottled water, lovely toiletries) and a nice bathroom too. And the food! Before I discuss the food, let me say how welcoming and helpful the staff were. Our first night we got in late and didn't expect to have a full meal. But they kept the kitchen open for us and served us a full dinner (which was marvelous!) Our meals were as wonderful as the Trip Advisor reviews said -- homemade, farm fresh, gourmet! We loved EVERYTHING we ate, and we tried several of the local specialties. Chef Paul does a fabulous job. We only wish we'd been able to stay longer (and eat more!). Our departure was at O-Dark-30, well before the kitchen opened, so that meant skipping breakfast. The staff offered to let us do our own toast and coffee in the kitchen at that ungodly hour! We ultimately passed on that kind offer, but wow! Hospitable doesn't begin to describe it. Oh, and they lent my husband a charger for his phone when he broke his. The bar stocked local brews and whiskies, which my husband sampled and pronounced very good. Only drawback is if you are carless (and we were), you are dependent on taxi service because they are outside Kirkwall. But the owners recommended a service to us (Craigie's, which was prompt, reliable and friendly) and that worked fine. The lovely views of Scapa Flow outside the dining room window and the quiet country setting made this a hotel we truly enjoyed. If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay after your sightseeing, and if you are interested in dining well on locally sourced foods, choose the Foveran. We hope to return someday soon.

Just visited Orkney with my husband & 3 young children to meet family that we haven't seen in 10 years that live local to the Foveran. The service was remarkable & made our children feel comfortable & welcome with food of their choice which was not offered on the menu.
My husband was taken back by the steak with haggis & says he's never had a steak that's melted in his mouth like that before.
Was a little on the pricey side but would go back for sure as worth every penny.
Thank you Foveran for making our family reunion an enjoyable one.

This was definitely the best food we had on our trip. But the rooms were like a college dorm room. Very tiny with worn, thin sheets and lumpy pillows but well equipped...except the bath. The awkward placement of the bottle of soap meant that while in the bathtub you had to stand up every time you want to get another dollop of soap out of the dispenser that was placed high up for shower users. The service was excellent and owner friendly.

We are just finishing a four night break at The Foveran and can honestly say that we cannot fault this "restaurant with rooms".

Our room is well equipped, clean, warm and comfortable.

The breakfasts and evening meals have been excellent with locally sourced and fresh ingredients; the choice is good and the quality cannot be faulted.

The Foveran is in a beautiful situation with breath-taking views of Scapa Flow and it is very easy to get to the different places of interest on the Orkneys from the hotel.

And as for the islands - what can we say other than absolutely beautiful. We have never seen such huge skies! Kirkwall and Stromness are both interesting, friendly little towns and the whole area is awash with historic sites, fantastic countryside buzzing with wildlife.....you can guess, we have become greatly impressed with Orkney!

It is a great treat to come back to The Foveran after a day touring the sights or walking the beaches, etc. to a warm welcome, a good cup of tea and homemade biscuits in the cosy lounge and then a sumptuous evening meal.

We love it here and would recommend the islands and The Foveran to anyone.

Room Tip: We were in Room 8 and were completely satisfied.

The Foveran combines the intimacy of a small establishment with the privacy of a larger hotel, and above all else offers fine and varied cuisine in comfortably appointed dining room overlooking the understated beauty of Orkney. The included breakfasts are nothing special, but more than adequate--and quite hearty--but it is the dinner fare that stands out. The hosts could not be more accommodating. Two members of our party are vegetarians, which we noted upon making our reservations. We were told to have a "wee conversation" with the chef upon our arrival, which we indeed did. Apart from the vegetarian dishes on the standard menu, he subsequently went out of his way to prepare different delicious options each of the five nights of our stay. It also worth noting that we arrived quite late our first night, but were nonetheless seated in the soon-to-closed dining room and afforded a fine and leisurely dinner. There is a comfortable lounge beside the dining room in which guests are seated while reviewing the menu and ordering dinner. There one can choose from a nice selection of single malt whiskies or other drinks before being called in for dinner-- a nice ritual that makes the evening that much more relaxing and special. Locals, seeking a special night, regularly pull up in cabs for a night on--or should I say, out of, the town. Accommodations are unremarkable, but clean, comfortable and quiet. One feels very much out in the country at the Foveran, but the lights of Kirkwall are visible in the distance and the town is a short drive away. Orkney is fairly small island, and the Foveran puts you within easy driving distance of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, Stromness, the Brough of Birsay and pretty much everywhere else you might choose to visit on Mainland. This is the place to stay, unless you are looking for an exciting nightlife in which case you shouldn't be going to Orkney in the first place!

We loved our time in Orkney, helped in great part by our stay at the Foveran. We loved the location, which was outside the city of Kirkwall and overlooking the Scapa Flow. We had a lovely room with a view and nice ensuite bathroom.

The breakfasts were delicious and hardy, and served in the lovely dining room, with great views of the Scapa Flow.

The staff was helpful with advice on sights, etc. We had easy access to town and sights all over the island.

The dinners were so amazing. We thought we might eat there one night and then do pub dinners, but ... no way... we ate there every night! And we met so many nice people, both other hotel guests and locals, while we had pre-dinner drinks in the lounge.

I definitely want to go back to Orkney, and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. I look forward to that day.

A restaurant with rooms, we had 2 nights bed and breakfast with one dinner. Food really exceptional, very helpful service and to see hen harriers with a birthday dinner was an unexpected treat. Lovely views from the lounge though the overall ambience of the hotel was a bit like a very smart suburban bungalow.
