“Warm stay in windy Orkney”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

Julie and Mike are great. the B&B overlooks the Kirkwall airport, but just like Julie said, the lights go out around 8.30 pm. I rather liked being OUTSIDE of town, Kirkwall, because I enjoy seeing stars, and even though Julie couldn't deliver an Aurora, the night sky was magnificant. It is handy location, not more than 2 minutes from the airport (did I tell you they turn the lights out?), and a quick drive into town for dinners, and walking around.
Orkney is beyond amazing with the neolithic sites, and a wonderful experience. it is a quick trip to all of the sights, and Julie is more than willing to give you guidance, and a brochure for your next adventure.
Our room was comfortable, and cozy... I would suggest stronger light bulbs but that is the ONLY suggestion.
After I slid down a hill of mud, on my rear, Julie got my only pair of jeans ready for the next day for a modest fee. I highly recommend it, and the breakfast was great, exactly as you ordered, on time, with cheer.

Room Tip: ask for the family room looking over the airport, really.

Thank you for your lovely review. Funnily enough, before receiving this, I noticed that the bulb in Inganess was not really bright enough so that's been changed already. Sorry there was no aurora, we have been treated to a couple of great displays this winter just a pity we couldn't 'book' it for you! BRgds Julie

My wife and I were fortunate enough to stay at Straigona B&B. From initially meeting Julie and Mike to the outstanding service they provided and the fantastic nights sleep. We can highly recommend staying here.

Julie and Mike offer evening meals and we chose to eat at the Straigona. Delicious tasting food equalling many 5 star restaurants we have eaten at. Highly recommend the pork tenderloin wrapped in parma ham with stuffing and highland park infused cherries. My wife loved the Salmon Mouse and Oatcakes. The desert was homemade Orkney Fudge cheesecake! Beautiful!

Very reasonably priced meal and a great breakfast made from locally sourced ingredients.

Beautiful views over the Bay of Inganess and surrounding farmland. Straigona is ideally placed to the Kirkwall Airport and has plenty of parking.

Room Tip: We had a room called 'Skaill'. Super King sized bed and full of great extras.

Everywhere they will say that they'll offer you a warm welcome. But a real warm welcome is when they turn on the heat for you, and that's what Julie did. Julie and Mike are a wonderful couple, owned by three cats which - much to their dismay - are not allowed into the rooms or the guest lounge (be careful, however, when moving the car!).
All bedrooms are on the upper floor. We had the room "Inganess" which is the largest of the guest rooms in the house, with a direct view onto Kirkwall airport (never mind, this is not London Heathrow!). The room has an en-suite which is quite spacious as well. The hospitality tray is well stocked, and - as the breakfast buffet - includes homemade treats.
Cooked breakfast itself is made to order and you will be spoilt for choice.
Julie and Mike are also very knowledgeable about lesser known local attractions on Orkney - just ask.
This house only leaves us with one problem: now we know two great places to stay in Kirkwall.

Room Tip: we can recommend Inganess

Thank you for your kind review - loved the comments about the cats!! Glad you enjoyed your stay and visiting some of the lesser known 'gems' on Orkney. We so enjoyed our evening chats - thank you for asking us to join you - they were very interesting. Look forward to seeing you again another year.

Can't fault this lovely couple Julie and Mike, they did everything they could to make my stay in Orkney a wonderful experience. Julie also provided me with a welcoming dinner each evening which was much appreciated by a worn out but very happy camper who saw all that awesome Orkney had to offer in the company of the fantastic guide Kinlay Francis from orkneyuncovered. Room was very comfortable with many extras provided including hairdryer, dressing gowns, towels, toiletries and more. Many thanks Julie for the Groutie Bucky and baked treats and I hope one day to return and stay with you again

Thank you Geraldine, it was a pleasure to meet you and have you stay with us. You will be pleased to know that the stairwell is being wallpapered this week - at last! Hope you come back and stay with us again, there's still plenty for you to see and lots more things on our menu to try! BRgds Julie & Mike

2nd stay at Stragonia, again a very warm "old friends" welcome from Julie and Mike and I must say even though Mike was struggling with a Hernia (operated the day after we left) this didn't stop the good hospitality or the delicious food, Julie's lamb was gorgeous and tasty but Mike's duck was world class, I have eaten at many high end restaurants on my travels but would say that was up there with the best of them, wow!

This time I was staying in the "Skaill" room, it had recently been updated and was spacious, tea/coffee facilities, super comfy (big) bed and a nice sized bathroom.

I will definitely be booking Stragonia again when I visit Orkney again. I would highly recommend this B&B for any sort of trip, thanks again Mike and Julie for another relaxing stay.

This was our first visit to the Oakney Islands. We had a great time despite the rain. Julie was helpful, and accommodating. The room was bright, clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend having Julie do your wash if you are traveling as we were over a two week period. It was a godsend to have fresh things to wear. They were hung out on the line and then allowed to rest inside a while to warm up. They were outside our door the next morning folded and ready to go. When we had to leave especially early the last morning and could not stay for breakfast Julie sent us off with a yogurt and a spoon.

We stayed two nights at Straigona. Mike and Julie are awesome hosts! We were in the Inganess Room, which had a lovely view. The beds were very comfortable and cozy, and the room was big enough for three adults (Mom, Dad, and adult daughter) to move around without feeling cramped. Julie has a wealth of knowledge about the area, and even provided a recommendation for dinner, along with a discount coupon! We took her recommendation and were not disappointed. They provided a map for us to use for the duration of our stay, which was most helpful as we did not have a satnav with us. Breakfast was awesome, and gave us a good start to the day. Julie had homebaked goodies available at all times, which made for a nice evening snack. I could go on and on but I'll finish by saying that if you visit this B&B you will not regret it.
