We visited Orkney in early July after spending three days in the Shetlands. Since we were doing a military tour the next day, Pat Stone tailored a perfect tour, skipping the military aspects of Orkney and left that up to Kenlay Francis. The main points of our tour were Maes Howe, the Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae (including a private tour of Skaill House (the laird’s second home)). At the end of the day Pat coordinated a tour of Highland Park Distillery and a special tasting of malts not provided as part of the standard tour. Because Pat and her husband operate a farm, she provided special information on agriculture in Orkney which was of interest to my husband who was raised on a farm in the U.S.
We loved the tour given by Pat. It was our first day and it gave us an excellent overview of the Orkney Islands. Her depth of knowledge of all aspects (guess that’s why she choose the name) of its history, people, and sites is exceptional. If Pat had had the time, we would have liked to have added another day with her. If you can, book several days with Pat.
She is just a delightful person to be with, an excellent driver, and well known and well liked throughout the area. While we were on the Maes Howe tour, she called about renting cars for us, after we had briefly mentioned that possibility, and reserved a table for us for dinner at a marvelous restaurant.
