This guest house was clean, with reasonably new decor, though not overly tasteful (tartan carpets, I thought it looked a bit '80s'). We were given a family room (only wanted a double). The bed was so uncomfortable - springs digging into our backs, all saggy - we hardly slept a wink (and we never normally have any problems!). The next morning at breakfast we politely informed the owner that we wouldn't be staying an extra night, and explained why. We expected him to maybe reduce the price a bit as a goodwill gesture but he didn't, although he did offer to swap the mattress. The breakfast was ok but certainly not the 'award winning' standard that the advert claimed it to be. Given the price (£52 I think) it was the worst place we stayed value-wise in Orkney, and certainly the most uncomfortable!

Unfortunately in this business, one very occasionally meets a guest who sets out to obtain a discount. The guests in question were given a larger room as we were quiet at that time of year, and it was freshly redecorated (as all our rooms are each year). Nevertheless, upon receiving the compaint, we offered to obtain, that day, a new matress, even though theirs was the only negative comment we have ever received about the beds. They made a show of checking out and going to find somewhere else. It turned out that the other place had already been booked. Please draw your own conclusions.
