“Our 'superior' room”

Kirkwall Hotel

The Kirkwall Hotel we’re told was to have been refurbished and fully renovated, but if it has the results are very disappointing. The first clue is the only lift with doors that have to be closed manually, meaning every time someone doesn’t close them properly, you’re left to walk up or down. Our ‘upgraded’ room overlooking the harbour was drab, totally pictureless, with horrible little printed notes stuck everywhere to provide you details from operating the fuzzy TV to evacuating in the event of a fire. It had only a shower (we didn’t find anyone who had a bath) and instead of proper bath mats, you’re provided with nasty paper mats which are fairly useless as well as wasteful. And bath towels fluffy and decent size, forget! Staff are helpful but the hotel has seen better days.

And by the way, don’t book a harbour view room if you’re staying over Friday and Saturday. The noise from the pub below will keep you awake till around 2am or longer. You have been warned.

I enjoyed my stay very much. The staff was friendly and very helpul; I had no problem getting ice for my recently-operated shoulder. My room had a harbour view as I had requested. Dinner was delightful as I had the lamb and their famous DarK Island Ale.

The two redeeming features of this hotel were the view of the harbour from my room, and the helpful and friendly reception staff. The rest of the hotel was pretty mediocre.

The bed was one of the hardest that i have ever slept in, although there was some impressive art-deco era furniture, echoing the more grand past of the hotel in the room.

The dining experience was most unsatisfactory: the breakfasts were terrible, lumpy porridge, inedible sausages, runny eggs etc., and the service was extremely poor, with frequent errors, long waits etc. The service was even worse at dinner, and the prices were too high, and did not reflect the quality of the dining room, nor the food served. There was an extremely long wait, and service was ropey. For some reason this restaurant is very popular, and unless you book a table (even if you are staying at the hotel) you will be rudely turned away.

I got woken up at about 7am, by the constant ringing of the telephone in an adjacent room. When i telephoned reception to complain there was no answer. The noise from the road below was also extremely loud, when the windows were opened for ventilation.

Should you decide to stay at the Kirkwall, i would definately request a room in the original building (not the grim 60s extension, which has nasty modern furnishings), and also a room with a harbour room. The best rooms, with high ceilings, big windows and grand furniture seem to be on the first floor, and in the original part of the building (which is an impressive looking building)

We didnt stay at the Kirkwall Hotel, we were at the Albert Hotel. For four nights we ate in your dining room ( with the springy floor - for dancing).

I could not fault either the staff, the Orkney courtesy or the excellent food - esp the steak pie !- and we were made to feel welcome .

Thank you for making our holiday that much more enjoyable
