“Very pretty on the outside but very dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2011

The hotel is in a gorgeous setting - especially surrounded by snow. The rooms are very dated and the hotel could do with a refresh, the food was very tasty. And the staff were friendly.

Stayed here a couple of times in July. Facade of the building impressive, great harbour view and nicely sized rooms. Pretty good restaurant too with hearty menu items like steak pie and excellent full breakfasts. Well located for ferry terminal, bus station and local shopping and a the few bar/restaurant options Kirkwall has to offer. The Indian round the corner is well worth a visit as is the chip shop next door. A bit of a wierd 'wait to be seated' arrangement at breakfast which seemed to be about staff more concerned with getting tables laid out for lunch and woe betide anyone who arrived after the 9:30am cut off. Excellent and relaxing old-fashioned reading room on the first floor. Needs to improve its wifi connection which was very erratic.

Room Tip: Ask for harbour view

Although we didn't stay at this hotel, we ate at its restaurant on two nights. The staff were prompt and pleasant and the menu was great, full of interesting and unusual combinations as well as classic dishes. We felt it was very good value too, approx £30 for 2 of us eating 3 courses. Recommended.

Although we had a few problems with heating - overall my father and Ioved our stay here. The staff were excellent and the owner couldn't have been more helpful. This attitude goes a long way. Thank you

We stayed six nights, and took dinner in the restaurant every evening except one - when we would have been too late back. The food was good, and there was plenty enough choice. It was popular, so it was necessary to book most nights. We had asked in advance for a room overlooking the harbour, and as high as possible. Our third floor room was spacious and did just that, with a fine view of the harbour, incoming ferries and the sea.
Each day we made an expedition to some other part of Mainland, or neighbouring islands using local buses and the ferry service. You needed a brain the size of a planet to fathom the intricacies of the timetables. Some things were possible only on some days. Try the tourist information first! They were very helpful. Bus drivers and ferry operators were helpful and friendly too. We had formidable weather: rain every day; force 12+ winds; and volcanic ash. Be prepared for changeable maritime weather. It is survivable! On our last day when we were due to catch the 23:45 ferry to Aberdeen we were able to take a £20 extension until 6 pm on our room which made the whole day enjoyable for local sight seeing.
The only slightly less than perfect scores relate to slight drain smells in the bathroom on the last two days (sorry reception- we forgot to report this), and although we negotiated a special rate for our double room, we still haven't got used to paying more than £100 per night for bed and breakfast.

Room Tip: If you want a harbour view, request it.

Owned and staffed by warm friendly Orcadians who go out of their way to ensure guests enjoy their stay. Ideally situated at the harbour with lovely views over Kirkwall bay , just walk round the corner and you are on the quaint main street of the town minutes from the impressive St Magnus Cathedral. The hotel caters for formal and informal dining and is very popular with local people.

Welcome was non existent and we had to quizz receptionist about wi-fi availability. My room needed updating. Bed was ok but far too short for someone who is 6'3". Kettle was dirty inside (I always chec before making a cuppa) lack of sockets meant you couldn't watch tv and use the kettle at the same time. Wi-fi wasn't available within the room. Shower pressure abysmal. Shower curtain was missing most of its hooks. Metal shower dish was rusty. Suspicious stain in front of WC. Mouldy sealant around sink. Link between room and en- suite very narrow - not one for wide people! Impression was that place needed a lot of TLC. Save your pennis and go to the Ayre Hotel instead!
