“Grand old house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

This B&B is very convenient location for the centre of Kirkwall and the Travel Centre and it is a lovely building outside and inside. The proprietors are also extremely pleasant, helpful and friendly. Our room looked out to the street at the front of the house and it had an en-suite shower room which was a good size. The bedroom was fitted out with twin beds joined to make a huge double bed which was very comfortable. The bed also had an electric blanket. In the bedroom was an appropriately old solid oak wardrobe and a small settee. Coffee, tea, etc and shortbread was available as was a TV and a radio alarm clock. Being a grand old house the windows were understandably single glazed. A small 2KW convector heater was available for use to supplement the central heating. The usual breakfast menu plus fish was available (including full English breakfast, porridge, yoghurt, etc and toast, tea/coffee) served in a very jovial and friendly manner by the man of the house. I am certainly very happy to recommend this B&B to anyone with confidence and without reservation.

We arrived to Kirkwall on the night ferry and were delighted to find such a beautiful and spacious room to rest in. The host were very accomodating even though our arrival was so late at night.
The air was chilly but the bed was very warm, thanks to the heating blanket, and we slept like rocks. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the decor. I just wish we had stayed longer!
Location is great, just a few minutes walk from the cathedral. The breakfast was good too.

We booked two rooms for two nights with Mrs. Ruth Muir over Easter Break. Booking was dead simple over the phone and Ruth doesn't require a deposit, credit card, or any other nonsense, just your word and decency you'll notify her if your plans change. Inform Ruth of your mode of travel so she'll know when to expect you, especially if by car/ferry.

The house is well situated just outside the city center, up the hill from St. Magnus Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, and the Earl's Palace. Parking is a bit tight but completely manageable. Rooms are spacious, clean, and inviting. Although located on a main thoroughfare, I did not find road noise to be a problem at night. Breakfast is typical British fare, served hot and to order.

Although 2 Dundas Crescent may not be optimal for families travelling with smaller children, I'm not sure I'd consider another location in Kirkwall. Ruth's rates were so affordable and her hospitality so excellent, I really wouldn't want to risk fixing what isn't broken. Since we were driving, we brought sleeping bags and a crib for our children, which we used here. The rooms are large enough to accommodate these and still have enough room to move around. Ruth's house is at a great location and we found it easy getting in and out to explore the island. I cannot see anybody being disappointed with this lodging option.

Its is important to note that as of this visit, Ruth only accepts cash or check as payment.

Room Tip: Take the space heater if one is offered. Ask for a space heater if one isn't offered. It will ta...

The location is great, the house is beautiful, and the room was very clean. The owners were very friendly and very helpful as well. Breakfast was included and it was delicious! If visiting Kirkwall, I highly recommend checking out Orkney Uncovered for a private tour of the mainland. You will be amazed by what you'll uncover.

Room Tip: I had a room with ensuite toilet and shower, over looking the front yard. A little cold in March, bu...

Just back from staying here for two nights for my son's graduation. Ideally located for the ceremony at the Cathedral and town. We had the two double rooms at the front of the house and were surprised at how big they were and my husband adored the claw bath in our room which was a luxury we did not expect!! Breakfast was good and both Ruth and Edgar were lovely and provided a light breakfast when we had to leave early for the ferry. Added bonus was that when the saturday morning ferry was cancelled we were allowed access back to our rooms to chill out until heading back to St Margaret's Hope a few hours later - thanks again Ruth for this. We would love to go back to Orkney again soon and would be happy to go back to 2 Dundas Crescent.

Room Tip: double room at the front has claw bath and shower - beautiful room

We've been at this B&B for two nights and I've really liked the atmosphere.
It's a 4minutes walk away from kirkwall center (the cathedral) and all the restaurants.

We were staying in the twin beds room and it was really spacious, with 3 big windows and a sofa. Tv and wi-fi set that are a bit old, but fully working.
The bathroom was new and big, loved the shower and how clean it was.

Breakfast is amazing and served in a beautiful dining room with a nice atmosphere.

Cherry on the top? Edgar and Ruth. They're amazing, cheerfull and caring.

I stayed at 2 Dundas Crescent on assignment for a radio station. It was a short walk away from town center, restaurants, sites, and shopping. My room was comfortable and neat, the bathroom was newly renovated and spotless, and the breakfast was delicious.

2 Dundas is a former Manse with high ceilings, beautiful tall windows, and great views of the surrounding garden. My room had a king sized bed, and the dining room was beautiful.

The TV and internet were a bit dodgy, but nothing a quick fix couldn't handle. Plus, why would you want to be in watching TV when there's more Orkney to explore?

Room Tip: I had the first bedroom upstairs on the left. It was great!
