“"Step it up"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

The food at the Rose and Crown is unquestionably good. However the poor service which we received has massively let down this establishment.
We waited 15 minutes for a pint and a coke and 25 minutes for a portion of bread (which when it arrived was burnt). The food is of high quality in general (and we could over see the chargrilled bread) but the lack of service really ruin our meal. During our whole time there we were checked back on once but the waitress walked away before we even had time to answer. We were not asked if we wanted anymore drinks and had to go to the bar to get a jug of water. The waitress went on her break straight after taking our order and it seemed that for the continuation of the meal we did not receive any service. The restaurant manager came over once and was seemingly rude (to the point where he didn't really want to have a conversation with us). The general manager seemed stressed and was darting around throughout our time there. We were not asked if we wanted dessert, which resulted in asking for the bill and leaving.
When payment was being taken by the individual looked surprised and remarkably annoyed that we did not leave a tip, and became increasingly dismissive, saying thank you and goodbye only to my partner addressing him directly as "Sir" even though I was the one who had paid!
All in all the food we could not question but the wait and the service which we received was shocking.

“Friday night was not alright even with a preorder - Price Premium not justified”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We were in a party of 12 for a leaving do so decided to go for a pre-order for 8pm (5 days in advance). We were promised the food would be on the table by then. Unfortunately at 8pm we were told the Fridge had broken the night before so we some of the fish dishes were off. Therefore we reordered and got the food for 8.45pm.
Generally the starters were good but the main course meat dishes were largely burn't. I felt sorry for a colleague who had saved his money and opted only for an 8oz sirloin steak only to be served up with a very burn't offering. Yes the deserts were good but in general I thought the restaurant didn't justify the "Cheshire" price premium (if you pick up the pdf menu from the website you will pick up on this point with key ingredients being emphasised as premium).
Yes there no service charge to pay and the sweets were knocked off the bill for the long wait but I was left embarrassed for dragging work colleagues up from Alsager/Stoke-on-Trent for a poor meal. What still puzzles me is why if the Fridge problem was identified on Thursday evening why was I not phoned or emailed on Friday pre-meal. Probably the answer could be the Restaurant Manager wasn't working Friday (or at least Friday evening) but I would have hoped systems and procedures would have allowed this job to have been delegated

“Not quite sure.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We had a party of 6 out on Sunday lunchtime to celebrate a birthday. The place was empty and we couldn't figure out if the incredibly slow ( but pleasant) service was an attempt at casual dining..or they'd just forgotten we were there. All of the starters were excellent, the fish soup in particular but there was a problem with all of the main courses. The taste was ok if a little over flavoured but the portions would have scared off Desperate Dan. The steak pie was excellent but just too big and the chicken and ribs option was just....well odd? The chicken was chicken wings ( not right on a ribs and wings main course surely?) and the whole plate had been covered with about a litre of melted licorice. cakes. It was way too sickly. We sent six full plates back and no one asked why ? In summary, nice place but the chef needs to have a lie down and reconsider his menu. We'll give it another try and stick to bouillabaisse.

“Fantastic Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

Dined with a group of friends on Friday and had a great evening. Eight of us met in the pub and nearly all ordered steaks. They were all perfect, full of flavour and served with roasted garlic. For afters we just ordered platters of cheese which were perfect, washed down with a very good Rioja.
We were seated towards the back of the restaurant on one long table which really suited our larger party.
A special mention to our waitress Sarah, looked after us from start to finish. Top job.

“Excellent Drinking and Dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

We visited here on Thursday night after it was recommended. In short it was perfect. We had drinks outside before we dined at an outside bar. It was heaving but the outside bar was quick to serve and we were soon sipping a bottle of Prosecco.
We chose to dine inside, it was cooler! The menu is a "Chophouse", which had quite a few hearty dishes on and lots of steak. Probably because of the heat we both chose fish specials, Hake and Sea Bream............absolutely delicious and well presented.
After the meal we then went outside again onto the terrace for some more drinks, it was super busy by this time and the atmosphere was amazing.
As pubs go this is right up there with the best, relaxed, great service and food.
