“Pub grub at its worst”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Nice, atmospheric pub, with a cheap, standard, pub menu, so I suppose one shouldn't have any unrealistic expectations. But my peri-peri chicken was perfectly ghastly, a lava of glutinous, synthetic, blood-red sauce, with a few onion rings thrown in, smothering a tough, old slab of chicken breast, leaving an unpleasant, vinegary after-taste.

Two of my eating companions hardly fared any better, the sirloin steak could have done with a black and decker rather than a knife and fork. The battered fish was dry, the chips were cold and tasteless, and any flavour in the mushy peas had been nuked into submission in the microwave.

But the risotto was nice, the starters were okay, and the service quick and cheerful.

“GOOD, CHEAP PUB FOOD”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This is not a gastronomic experience but is good, cheap pub food. The menu has a great variety of things to choose from so everyone should find something they fancy. The food is good quality pub food and was hot. There is sometimes a bit of a wait depending on how busy it is but nothing too much. We took our 6 year old son, who was made very welcome.

“Especially good for larger groups”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

The most abused words in the English language have to be "Gastro-pub".

Thankfully, The Angel does not make this mistake. It is honest-to-goodness "Pub-grub" that never ceases to fail even on busy days like today, when everyone wants to dine out on the first Sunday in December.

We were meeting up with friends and family ageing from 4 to 72. We reserved a large table which was still waiting for us at 1pm. The menu is extensive and has the usual favourites so that everyone was satisfied. No one had the Roast Sunday lunch.

Only the children managed a dessert afterwards. The whole bill with drinks only came to £68.

The only slight hiccough was the time it took to get the food - just over an hour, but it was exceptionally busy. A mid-weekday lunch arrives quickly, barely giving you time to enjoy the Holts beers.
