This was a disappointing stay for a number of reasons. The property is largely in satisfactory condition, and there is plenty of evidence which suggests that they can deliver a positive experience for guests. However on this occasion, the hotel let itself down by: (1) Advising when contacted by phone 24 hrs. before arrival that a dinner reservation was not necessary; but then stating on arrival that it would be difficult because they were very busy; (2) poor maintenance standards reflected in (e.g.) a patio outside a "superior" room which was neglected, dirty, overgrown and unusable; (3) hit-and-miss housekeeping which left a room unserviced during a two-night stay; etc.
The receptionist sitting eating a "full Scottish breakfast" whilst on duty at the front desk would suggest that the staff team at this hotel are not very familiar with the standards associated with a 4-star hotel, although the hotel's management clearly understand what a 4-star hotel can command in terms of rate.
On checking out the receptionist's advice in relation to a query over standards was along the lines of "The next time you stay with us please bring these matters to our attention". There won't be a next time.
