We walked on a beautiful day right the way across to the castle. The castle itself is interesting, but my favourite bit about it all was the wonderful walk. We took our two dogs along with us and they equally loved it. Our tyre burst on our child's buggy (even though it is a pretty mean off-roader), which we stupidly wasn't prepared for, but luckily this happened towards the end of our walk. This, however didn't ruin our trip but made it better as it meant we took the ferry (which we wasn't planning on doing) back to Keyhaven. The ferry was a little boat which took about 10 people from memory (i may be wrong). It chuffed along through the lovely sailing boats in harbour which was lovely a pleasant to get an upclose look at the boats and birds and wildlife. I loved this day, it was the highlight of my holiday and would definitely do it again when I return. We were a family with a young baby who was happy to watch the world go by in his pram, however I think this trip is much more suited for active families used to hiking/outdoors types, couples or older families and I can imagine younger children would get bored.
I have ticked the box to say there is no fee for this attraction as the walk itself is free, however I would recommend that you visit the museum which there is a fee for, as it gives you a nice break from the walk, you can have a nice drink in the cafe (or packed lunch is what we did on the grass). There is also a charge for the ferry if you choose to take this back.
