Just returned from a very relaxing weekend. Would certainly have no issue returning to the hotel but would make the following comments.
Check In was very simple in that we were asked for nothing - no signature, no Credit Card, no details at all. Whilst this was refeshing in some ways it was also slightly strange and my partner and I did wonder about things like Credit Card theft etc. For example, I could of booked on line with a stolen CC - walked in and said the matching name - stayed a couple of nights then just walked out. I was also under the impression it was a legal requirement to register at a hotel. Something to do with the Home Office.
The hotel is Grand in a modern trendy way - kind of boutique hotel like. Room (214) was very well appointed - lovely bath and great sea view. Housekeeping could be a bit sharper - 4 star after all. Mirror in the bathroom was dirty and there was some dust in various parts of the room. There was also water in the kettle from the previous guest and a number of the scatter cushions were notably marked.
Slight design fault in the bathroom in that there is a down light directly above the sink - so trying to shave was impossible as the light cast a black shadow across your face. Also the gap between the toilet and the door frame is really small and if you were to get up a tad quick you could knock yourself out!! My other observation is there are no shelves or storage in the bathroom for toiletries - One of those bathrooms that is all design and no function. On a side note the water in the hotel is heavily chloronated - don't drink it from the taps it is horrible.
Meals both nights were very nice and the Cafe Grand has a lovely atmosphere - modern but not overpowering. Whilst it is not cheap it is no dearer than anything you would pay in a 4 star chain hotel like Marriot or Hilton. Breakfast was just continental with our on line rate, cooked was extra, but fine and plenty of choice. All staff we came into contact with were pleasant and friendly.
We used the Spa which was very quiet so had the place almost to ourselves. Pool is small but good enough for a splash about. Again there was visible mold and dirty windows in the Spa that just shows a lack of detail. Considering the place has only just finished an extensive refurb you would think this would be easy to stay on top of.
Biggest issue is noise and whilst some of this lies with the hotel for not perhaps putting closers on bedroom doors and having paper thin walls (so many hotels do now). To be honest if some guests just had the courtesey to remember that there are other people in the building and use the handles on the doors rather than slamming them it would help. We were woke at 1am by the most almighty thud from our neighbours door. Then on both mornings at about 5am the couple the other side were up and about watching telly and chatting at such a volume you could almost join in!! Most big hotel groups have volume locks on TV's now to prevent this. Would be useful here to. Sadly one can't lock guests mouths!!
Despite these few niggles I would recommend the hotel for a break - particularly as the hotel attracts few children and is probably pricey enough to keep a certain Blackpool type client away - I know that is not PC but I work hard and want peace and quiet more than anything else when I go away. Drunks, stag and hen parties, kids running about etc is not me.
