Owner description: The splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is one of the finest examples of late 12th century domestic architecture in England. The Great Hall is best known for its collection of commemorative Horseshoes donated by Peers of the Realm. It is also decorated with a range of 12th century sculptures. Above the columns are six musicians, each playing a different instrument. They are made of local stone from Clipsham and although damaged, they are of superb quality. They are believed to have been carved by masons who had worked at Canterbury Cathedral.

“Horseshoe "Hall"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

I was a little underwhelmed on the approach, as it resembles a hall not a castle. Once inside though, I was very impressed! The Castle has a very unusual tradition - upon the first visit of any "peer of the realm", they must donate a horseshoe to the Lord of the Manor. These horseshoes are displayed on the walls inside - over 200 horseshoes dating from 1470 to modern day. Entrance is free and you are permitted to take photographs.

“Oakham Castle for Horse Shoes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

Oakham Castle is not really a castle - rather a large hall where justice was meeted out in years gone by and today is a favourite for weddings! The Horseshoes are very much part of the history of Oakham and all important visitors had to donate a horseshoe. Going back many years, this is a fascinating display and the lady guide was very informative on the free tour.

Certainly worth a visit - it's tucked away behind the market.

“Delightful Building With Unique Displays”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

Well maintained building with interesting displays of horseshoes presented by visiting nobility over hundreds of years. Only takes a short while to get a flavour of the history and significance of the building in picturesque Oakham.
