Arriving on friday evening we were greeted with a warm welcome from our host and after a quick tour of the amenities were shown to our room to be confronted by the biggest and comfiest bed we'd ever seen. Staying in the Dryad Suite we were treated to spectacular views which were fully appreciated when the weather cleared up later in our stay. Resisting the temptation to snuggle down for the night, we freshened up in our luxurious en-suite which was filled with locally produced artisan toilitries. We had opted to sample the hosts cooking and headed down for supper. Stopping first in the cosy bar where an open fire ,a chilled English wine and a ecclectic choice of music helped relieve the last of our travel weariness.
I'm glad to say eating in was an excellent choice with generous portions of good honest home cooked food. We were joined for supper by all the other guests and the company was as good as the food. A special mention for the glorious cheese board and fantastic ice cream which was complimented by a tipple of druid fluid that brought a flush to the cheek and a twinkle to the eye.
An enjoyable night was concluded with a dip in the hot tub, sheer bliss and a perfect end to the evening. One which was replicated every night of our stay and rewarded on the final night with a cloudless sky and a superlative view of the milky way.
A substantial nights sleep interrupted by neither sound nor light was perhaps the unexpected highlight of the weekend. I can honestly not remember a more tranquil slumber.
No review of the Hill house would be complete without an honourable mention to the great breakfasts which set you up for day. I love a good fry up and the sausage, eggs and bacon were top class all washed down with a steaming pot of tea and a chilled glass of local speciality rapple juice..beautiful!
Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hill House. Duncan and Alex are
great hosts and if you're looking for a relaxing, informal getaway I couldn't recommend anywhere higher.
