We stayed here on Saturday night. Despite the fact that we had pre-booked our 'superior room', we found our room in total darkness. It would have been nice if somebody had thought to put a light on before we arrived. As it was, the lights were those dreadful energy-saving bulbs so we had to move around the room by braille even after they had been on for two hours. The lights in the bathroom were slightly brighter, but there still wasn't a good enough one for the application of make up for a high maintenance girl. The wi-fi didn't work. You needed a science degree to work out the shower/bath combination and the dial was broken so you couldn't see what you were supposed to do anyway.

We came back from a party and hoped to have a drink on our return but were told that the bar closed at 11pm. This was on the Saturday before Christmas! No mini bar in the room either.

Our Sunday morning paper didn't arrive till nearly 9am. However, the bed was very comfortable with nice cotton sheets even if the room was on the front of the hotel and fairly noisy. Breakfast was OK if a little uninspiring (and we weren't given a menu until we asked for one) and my sausage was uncooked in the middle.

Room Tip: Free wifi but it didn't work.

Hotel was clean, staff were polite and attentative. Food excellent as always. This is the fourth Old English Inns hotel we have stayed in. On arrival we were given our room keys and we were in the old building and our friends were given keys to room 31 in the extension. Our room was small and compact compared to our friends so we decided to ask if we could move. We were given room 41 keys and we were not disappointed. These rooms are large with beautiful views and a sofa to lie on and stare out to the landscape. The location is great being just outside of the town with the plenty of shops. Will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Rooms 31 or 41

Stunning views over the Wye from the windows of the bar dining area. Menu pretty basic bar standards at very reasonable prices. Staff cheerful and effective. Good central position for the town with convenient parking.

Had lunch here twice in the last 2 weeks and both times the food has been good. Nothing spectacular, but well done 'pub standards' and very tasty. Service very good - although the bar does seem understaffed at busy lunchtimes, so have had to wait to order both times.

They have a weekday special on which means that the lunches are very good value - we will be making this a regular lunchtime visit I suspect.

The hotel has been refurbished since my last visit a few years ago, and is now very nice - with a great view over the river Wye and surrounding countryside. Would recommend.

Just an update on The Royal. We,ve stayed here on a number of occasions but on our latest visit we found the place has had a serious refurb. It,s lovely, a great spot, nice staff and a good varied menu. The only grouse, and I know it,s trivial, but the "illy" cups and mugs, a nightmare for any able handed individual to hold and not burn yourself on the contents. It,s something to do with the handle shape, goodness knows how someone with an arthritic hand would hold them. Anyway, as I said it,s trivia but worth a mention.

Room Tip: Towards the River
