“Wonderful evening dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2014

We didn't stay overnight at the royal hotel but we had a delicious dinner there on valentines night. Looking around inside, the hotel looked beautiful, so I am sure it would have been lovely to stay over. All the restaurant staff were so helpful and friendly. The ambiance was lovely.a really nice hotel

Room Tip: We did not stay so unable to advise please ignore the above review re rooms etc

I am in a Group of "Exiles" from the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir getting together once a year to meet our old friends from our days in Hong Kong. We come from all over England and Wales, so Ross-on-Wye is a very convenient place to have our Annual Dinner.

We have been doing this for some years but this is the first time I have done a review of the Hotel.

The hotel is very traditional old building and although it has two stories there is no lift and the stairs are rather steep, it is conveniently located near the centre of the old part of Ross set in elevated position with spectacular views across the Wye Valley.

The decoration is a bit tired as is the furnishing of the rooms. My wife and I found it very hot during the night with not much ventilation. The bathroom was again pretty basic but clean enough but a faulty soap dispenser was not fixed even when I mentioned it to the front desk.

The bar area was reasonably spacious with a balcony again affording great view over the Wye Valley, the Dining room was again fairly basic with traditional but furnishings. The evening dinner was a good but not brilliant three course meal, I had a Shredded Duck Roll for starters with Leg of Lamb for Main and Apple Pie for Sweet, my wife had Mushrooms, Lamb and cheesecake for sweet we were both were fairly happy with the food the only unfortunate thing was that the Lamb was swimming in a rather bland gravy which we did not like.

We were expecting the bar to open after our dinner so that we socialise in there but were very disappointed when it closed at 11:00pm

The staff were generally friendly and attentive and gave good service apart from the early closing of the bar!!

The breakfast the following morning was very good with wide selection of dishes of hot dishes I just had bacon, sausage, egg and mushrooms which were cooked well.

The whole stay, Accomodation Dinner, Bed and Breakfast cost £143.00 for the two of us which we thought was good value.

Room Tip: Try to get a view over the Wye Valley

This hotel is perfect for a short stay in the beautiful town of Ross On Wye. It's location is great, with pleasant views as is in an elevated position. I struggled to find a car parking space and had to park on the toad which is free between 6pm and 8am, but I didn't arrive at the hotel until after 9.30pm and had to be out early so was not too much of an issue. The hotel is old, but clean. It's got list of character and worth reading up on the history of the building.
I stayed in a single room as was a business trip. The room was large with a single bed, perfect for what I needed. The restaurant/breakfast room was large and airy, breakfast was good and all of the staff I came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. It's a short 2 minute walk into the centre. All in all a pleasant stay and I will definitely return here with my partner for a weekend stay. Thank you.

We stayed for a 2 night break because of the great offer from Old English Inns - excellent value for money. The hotel has a commanding view over the river and certainly has plenty of character. We found out that it is due to be refurbished in April but were assured it should not lose any of its charm. The rooms are quite big and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the meals (breakfast and evening) were excellent quality and reasonably priced. A room overlokking the river would be ideal as it is on the opposite side to the church where it insisted on chiming every quarter hour throughout the night! Eventually you do get used to it. All in all a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the river have great views and reduced chuch bells noise

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of March 2014. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The restaurant served good food at a very reasonable price. The Hotel is closing for refurbishment but does not effect your stay. Fantastic view from room made this a very good week end break

This was our first trip away since Christmas and maybe our expectations were too high. The first sight of the hotel was great, as it stands above the river Wye but on entering the building, we saw how disappointingly drab it was and needed a good scrub everywhere. On a positive note, the view from the garden on a lovely, sunny day was spectacular. The view from our room balcony was the same. The restaurant was quite dark and the food was uninspiring. We've both worked in catering and the staff appeared very insincere. However, it was great value for money.

We too took advantage of the offer and had a fantastic view of the river and countryside from an excellent room. It really was great value for money as are most Old English Inns. The breakfast was a little hit and miss at times and the dining room a little dowdy but no major complaints for the money. Yes, it's perhaps a little faded and jaded prior to refurbishment but it still kept a certain charm. Staff very friendly.
Would love to return one day and see the 'new version'.

Room Tip: Room 25 I hope in future will still be a great and quiet room
