“Fantastic View; very friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2012

We booked at the last minute for a stop over on a long journey. Our room had fantastic views of the Wye and was clean and comfortable. The staff, most of whom were from South Africa, were very friendly and provided good service in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. The only niggle was a cold breakfast but that was swiftly corrected. We intend to return in the summer and make use of the veranda outside of the bar which has an incredible view.

Just got back from one night away in Ross on Wye. Fantastic place, the hotel exceeded our expectations! Our room was a very large room with high ceilings and a floor to ceiling window over looking the river and fields. Such a wonderful view to wake up to. Lovely food at lunch and the staff from reception to the bar were brilliant. Will be using Old English Inns again!!! Superb!!!

Had a 2 night break here at the end of January. Nicely situated, pleasant staff, especially the lad behind the bar, who showed us to a nice table beside a roaring log fire! Floorboards very creaky in our room (14) and you could hear creaking up above all the time.
Breakfast could have been hotter, food in evening fine..

My husband and I stayed at this hotel in June 2011 as we wanted a good base for touring the area. We had a very large room with wonderful panoramic views and enjoyed it so much that we decided to return as soon as work commitments allowed. We stayed again for 5 nights over the New Year, and it did not disappoint. The staff worked very hard to ensure all guests had a great time, good food, good service, good entertainment. The hotel is in a perfect and accessible location for the town, a little older in style perhaps, and the stairs may be an issue if there are mobility problems.Otherwise good choice and excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Hotel has several "feature" rooms which are larger and have wonderful views, these cost a...

We stayed here last weekend with friends booked on a special deal via the local newspaper. We were not dissapointed. All staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Its a great base if you want to explore the Forest of Dean etc. We ate in the hotel both evenings and the food was lovely and service efficient. Would definately recommend with or without squeaky floorboards. I imagine its a lovely place to go in the summer months when you can sit outside overlooking the river.Thank you for a lovely stay.

My partner and I stayed here for a weekend break (Friday - Monday)
The hotel is old but perfectly adequate. The hotel bar seemed to be populated by locals (which is not a bad thing!) and is very busy. We arrived late on Friday and the car park was full, it is pretty small. Anyway here is a tip if you get there and find it full. Just come out of the car park and turn left and down the side road - there is loads of parking there (be warned you can only park there for 2 hrs from 9am - 6pm Monday to Saturday. Therefore you can really park there from 4pm - 11AM the next day)
The room (number 14) was perfectly fine - don't expect 5 star luxury (the bathroom needs a bit of updating - but everything worked so who cared!) and the floorboards squeak - so no sneaking about to the toilet in the middle of the night! LOL
Saying that the hotel was very quiet, no noise after about 10:30 and didn't hear any tv's or anything.
I liked the hotel and would stay there again - although perhaps better in the summer when you can actually see something and sit outside!

We stayed at the Royal for 2 nights (27th & 28th Dec) and enjoyed it very much. The staff were very nice and extremely helpful.
The only downside was the access to the rooms (we had room 50), it was quite a way from reception and up a lot of stairs, so if you have mobility problems you should advise the hotel in advance!
Breakfast was excellent and the bar food was good as well.
