“Good Food Reasonably Priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

Overall we enjoyed a very nice meal here.

Our reservation was for 8 pm and admittedly we arrived bang on time and would have liked a drink in the bar first but were encouraged to go straight to our table as a large party was expected shortly. Perhaps we should have got there a little earlier?

The menu was good with a nice selection of dishes and it seems an effort is made to use local produce where possible. My Pate starter was nice and the mussels we had were described as particularly good. All of the main courses we had were tasty and plentiful although my wifes sirloin steak was a little fatty. The sweets were particulary good and home made and the cheeseboard was excellent.

All dishes are reasonably priced and the house wine, both red and white, are priced sensibly.

The service was good although at times the large party of about twenty golfers were demanding most of the attention.

The only real niggle was at the end of the evening when we had one more drink and coffee in the front lounge area. When we ordered these last drinks we were asked to settle the whole bill as it was apparently getting late (although there was plenty of customers still in the bar area) and we were soon encouraged to drink up by the waitress wiping our table and blowing out the candle before we had finished our drinks. Ten more minutes would have been nice but it felt a bit like "you've had your meal and paid your bill so off you go".

Nevertheless, this is certainly one of the better restaurants in Ross on Wye and would recommend going there.

Thank you for your review, we pleased you enjoyed your meal at the King’s Head Hotel and appreciate the effort we put in to serve tasty local fresh produce at a reasonable price.

The King’s Head, as well as having a popular restaurant and bar, is also a three star hotel with fifteen guest bedrooms. We therefore, do have a duty to ensure that our residents are not unduly disturbed by patrons leaving late at night and from noise emanating from the public areas. Whilst still offering an enjoyable evening out for both drinkers and diners. To this aim, we do try and have the hotel’s public areas clear before midnight.
Last orders are called in the bar just before 11pm and according to our records you were served and paid your bill at around 10.45pm. The bar was certainly still busy at this time. At around 11.22 the bar had become almost empty, the front room candles were extinguished and the tables wiped. About five minutes later just before 11.30 pm you and your party left.

I am sure the impression you got that you were being pushed out early by the candles being turned out was not intentional and I can only apologise. I will however, mention this to all the staff that this impression does not reoccur and that the candles are left lit a little longer.

Thank you again

“Delicious lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Unassuming from the outside, the restaurant is much bigger than it looks, and we chose to sit in the comfortable front dining room with a view of the street. Good lunch menu with plenty of local produce. My partner and I both chose a ploughmans which was the nicest I'd ever had. Served on a wooden platter, there was a choice of cheeses and I had Stinking Bishop, Hereford Hops and Stilton. The bread was home-made and there were plenty of pickles, relishes and coleslaw, also tasted home-made. The salad was served in a small bowl alongside, and made a change from the usual lettuce leaf and tomato that forms part of traditional pub fare. Pickled onions and celery rounded off the platter, and it was totally delicious. Would definitely recommend and hope to return.

“Great find! Great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

Having never been to Ross-on-Wye and being in the area on a Sunday afternoon we had not booked but the staff accomodated us were polite and friendly.
We had starters, roast beef lunch and cheese board to finish. Starters and mains were served hot with only a short wait considering they were busy. Our only slight criticism is we could have done with a little more gravy. We had a cheese board after with a choice of fantastic local cheeses. We would certainly go back next time we are in the area.
