“Classic styled and traditional family run hotel in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

The Edwards Family run a personable reliable dependable hotel. The Restuarant Manager Luigi, is characterful and very professional, including Ian the Bar Manager. Some might consider the style outdated, however there's something quaint about this place - almost as if you expect Hercule Poirot to walk in and solve a murder! Ideal for taking your parents away as a special treat. If your lucky, sometimes the Edwards family send you a Christmas card.

Our only comment, which is a suprising one, is we were shocked to see young Mr Edwards racing around the tight lanes in their big Jag, with no consideration for the tourists and risk of an accident! Not wise and not impressed! We suggest more care before these an incident!

Room Tip: Always ask for sea view and not the 1st floor rooms directly over the restaurant flat felt roof! 2n...

Many thanks for your kind review (Hercule Poirot and supporting cast actually had dinner with us a few years ago!). ALL issues have been noted by myself the Old Mr Edwards and should reassurance be required I drive the Jag 99.9% of the time!

Lovely traditional hotel, with such helpful and friendly staff. Lovely swimming pool and hot tub, staff in the gym so helpful. Can't beat sitting in their beautiful bay window sipping a glass of fizz or munching on a devon cream tea. Chap behind the bar has been there for all the 20 years we've been visiting I think and it's always nice to be greeted with his friendly smile and chat.

Thank you Nina 171 for your review and for returning to us over the years. Thank you also for specifically praising our Head Barman, - Ian. He has been a loyal and leading member of our team for many, many years. They all work hard and care about giving an enjoyable experience to our guests but Ian is the one who sets the standard.

After seeing the superb long range weather forecast we booked last minute for a 2 night stay at Tides Reach following a recommendation from a friend who had recently stayed. We were not disappointed! It was a wedding anniversary treat and although we had not specifically booked as such, my sister had arranged with the hotel a beautiful bouquet of flowers & bottle of wine in the room. We had a room on the second floor, no balcony ( there were none of these rooms available) but the room itself was spotlessly clean, well equipped with a large bathroom. Only downside was it was very warm but this could not be avoided due to the outside temperatures climbing to 28 degrees. There was an electric fan in the room which was needed & a blind at the window which helped. Beds etc all very comfy, lovely big bath towel sheets which makes a change from the postage stamp bath towels often in hotels! The food can only be described as outstanding - the choice is excellent, beautifully presented - you will not go hungry! We were allocated a window table which we kept for our stay, only downside was breakfast on the first morning, the awnings over the windows had not been put out and it was hot!! The service cold not be faulted, the staff are very good, pleasant and attentive. The location of the hotel is lovely, there is a ferry into Salcombe from the beach. The beach itself is not spectacular, quite small and there is nothing to do in the evening - you can take a walk but it is uphill both ways. Great visit to Overbecks National Trust property which is a steep walk up hill but well worth the visit. We didn't use the pool or the other facilities but it all looked good. The gardens are pretty & the ducks were a source of amusement. All in all we enjoyed our break, one observation however is that although we are in our mid fifties, we were probably one of the younger couples there. This didn't worry us at all. Neither did the drive there which has been commented on - typical windy lanes. We would definitely return - thank you all at Tidesreach for a relaxing stay!

Room Tip: I am sure a room with a balcony would be nice but our room number 17 on floor two was fine and had g...

Many thanks Makalolo for this detailed and full review. Again I will make the Team aware of your apreciation of their services and efforts. Sorry about the awnings not being out on one morning, sometimes the wind can be too strong them and we cannot extend them. I hope that this was the case that morning! This time of year is also the most popular time for couples 'who are older than you' and who do seek to get away before the school holidays. The mix of ages is often more mixed at other times.

Having not been to Salcombe for many years decided a treat for myself and partner, chose Tides reach as it seemed a very pleasant hotel and value, lets face it nowhere in Salcombe that's any good is cheap.

We were very pleased with our choice , rooms where lovely , bathroom had just been redecorated, the food was fabulous and excellent value for money, staff were attentive and helpful, location is first class, and all in all very pleasant, ive read some other reviews and I think some are a bit unfair, whilst we went in July it was outside of School holidays and myself and my partner enjoyed the fact , the were now children running around, whilst the clientele are yes on the more mature side it was great , dressing properly for dinner and yes ties are not compulsory, thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back,

Many Thanks

The Tides Reach Hotel is truely a little gem of the South Hams. Nestling between the tree covered outcrops of ancient bedrock it faces South Sands with uninterrupted views of the estuary and its constant comings and goings of every type of leisure craft imaginable. To compliment the view the staff are efficient, friendly and the meals are varied and imaginative sourcing everything locally. The rooms are a decent size, well kept and clean. I am glad I booked when I did and am looking forward to my next visit. Well done.

Room Tip: My garden facing room was fab. Good views of the Sea tractor every half hour and the antics of the d...

My wife & I recently enjoyed a short break at The Tides Reach, blessed with almost unbroken sunshine although the strong easterly wind made sitting outside a little uncomfortable.

The hotel's location is superb - the lanes are narrow in places but you are rewarded with uninterrupted views of the estuary & a feeling of splendid isolation The South Sands Ferry is right on the doorstep offering easy access to the village centre if the 30 minute walk is regarded as too daunting !

The decor is a little dated in places although the bathroom in our balcony room appeared to have been recently refurbished. The facilities are excellent. All of the staff that we came into contact with were friendly & very effective - being able to use the facilities of the hotel after check-out on the last day of our stay was a bonus. The range & quality of food in the restaurant was high - although I am not too sure about the apparent practice of being allocated a specific table for the duration of one's stay - better perhaps to give everyone the chance of a window seat at some point !

We plan to stay at The Tides Reach again. If Tripadvisor allowed me to do so I would score this hotel as 4.5 !

Room Tip: Go for a Balcony Room - but hope that the wind isn't in the east !

Thanks for your review, delighted that you would like to return we will have to try and organise a Westerly wind! Sorry that you did not get to sit at a window table. We do try and be as fair as possible with regard to wndow tables but sometimes opportunities do not arise.

We recently went for a shirt 3 night stay at Tides Reach and we can't wait to go back.
The location is unbeatable and the restaurant is excellent. I have to echo what others have said in that the service in the restaurant and elsewhere is unbelievably good - they just get everything right without being too over-bearing.

Room Tip: make sure you get a room with sea view
