“Average and overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2008

We booked a one-night stay in a self-catering unit, called The Potting Shed. We arrived quite late and found the room a little cold although they knew we were coming. The room was large with a spare bed up above us which could be reached by a set of ladders. Our shower was okay but could have done with an upgrade although the bath towels' were lovely. Our bed was large and comfy with clean linen. Breakfast was eaten in the owners sitting room where a large dining table had been placed. The meal was okay but for the price they charge I would have expected extras like yoghurt, fresh fruit etc and it would have been helpful if they'd have removed beforehand the 2 shotguns lying on the table next to where we were eating!

Overall we felt the cost of £70 for 1 night was well overpriced for what we got. A pity really it is set in a superb location with lovely views and it would only take a few personal touches to make the experience one to remember. Didn't feel we got value for money.

We booked to stay at the Mount Tavy Cottages for Easter 2008 and stayed in the Tack room.

Joanna and Graham were delightful and very flexible with regards to the cottage.
Appears to have been recently redecorated and was clean and warm. Has everything you would need for a short break, fridge, hob, kettle, toaster etc. Electricity is supplied via a coin meter, don't for get your £1 coins!!!

The Cottages themselves are along an unmade drive which can be abit bumpy, but seeing as there are free range farm birds about care should be taken anyway. We found a little turning slightly further up the road to get into the top gate of the drive to avoid having to turn around.

The view from the Tack room is great, you are far enough away from the B3357 not to see or hear any cars but close enough to walk into Tavistock town in about 15 mins. If your lucky, you might even get a visit from the resident horse if you're sat out on the verandah enjoying your tea and toast in the morning.

Will definitely stay there again and have recommended it to the in laws too!

I carefully picked the B&Bs for a short holiday with my boyfriend, and among them was the Mount Tavy Cottage, which looked very lovely and charming on the website, as well as in a B&B guide.
After several emails and phone discussions with the owner, we confirmed a one night stay during the week on a self-catering basis.
On the day we were due to arrive at the Mount Tavy, we went for a trip and I couldn't answer my mobile during this time. Coming back, I found a text of Mount Tavy asking for a call, as there would be an issue with our accomodation.
When calling them, I was simply told that they would be unable to stick to our agreement as the guests having stayed there the night before decided to stay another night. So, we found ourselves being thrown out of the B&B just a few hours before we wanted to arrive - I don't even want to think about such a situation in high season!
I was absolutely furious, because as a guest, I certainly would have had to pay for the night!!
We finally found another, more reliable host, but would never ever recommend to anyone to go to Mount Tavy - because you could never be sure if someone staying there decides to stay another night...

We booked a one-night stay in one of the property's self-catering units, called The Potting Shed. It was a really mixed experience. A warm welcome, and a great recommendation for dinner - the Peter Tavey Inn and couple of miles away. The large room with mezzanine floor for extra bed had obviously been carefully converted, and had a nice private verandah overlooking fields. A good shower, huge soft bath towels, very comfy beds with high quality linen. And excellent scrambled eggs brought over to the room for breakfast.
But ... the unit and its entrance were next to a semi-derelict and depressing greenhouse with a withering vine and lots of junk; the two chairs for the dining table were aluminium garden chairs with several broken plastic slats; supplies had not been checked so no teabags and only one teaspoon; the lost remote control for the TV had not been replaced so controls were on an open panel on the small set high on the wall. And most unpleasant was finding the bathroom bin had not been emptied since the previous occupants.
There's great potential there, but I think it let itself down - apart from the greenhouse, the negatives above would all be so easily remedied and so provide a quality experience. We didnt feel it was value for money. But it could be !
