I booked a night at the Queen Victoria hotel in Wolverhampton after seeing pictures & descriptions on an internet hotel site. However, on arrival, I realised that internet & reality were far removed! The hotel appeared to be more like a hostel with chipped paintwork, peeling paper etc. On checking in they attempted to charge more than I had been quoted on booking, but my insistence paid off & I was charged the lower rate.
My room was in a seperate building to the one I checked in at. The room was rather shabby (not the 'superb' or 'sumptuous' decor described!). The curtains were coming away from the rails, thick dust in corners, tiny tv with two remotes (neither of which worked properly), vertical blinds at the bathroom windows which had strips missing thereby giving the outside world a view into the room! The toilet was at the end of the bathroom, around a corner with a light fitting but no visible means to switch it on!
Showering was haphazard (no toiletries provided) with a miniscule drizzle of lukewarm water turning icy cold within a minute.
Worst of all was the bed. The mattress was so old & uncomfortable that I resorted to folding the duvet in half & lying on top of it with my coat as a blanket! Added to this, the room was boiling as the radiator was on full blast & had no way of turning it down or off. Top notch comfort I don`t think! Lots of noise in the night - banging doors & shouting.
Breakfast was on offer, but I declined a cooked version sticking with toast only. The room was occupied by people who all seemed under twenty, confirming my suspicions that this was more hostel than hotel.
Overall an unpleasant experience all round & one that I would not recommend.
