“Much Improved Hotel and Reasonable Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

I reviewed this hotel just over a year ago. The rooms were pretty shabby and really below the standard to expect of even a budget hotel.
Well, what a difference a year makes! The hotel rooms are in a separate building a few metres from the restaurant, bar and reception. They're just finishing off a complete refurb of the rooms, so much so that it reeks of new paint and the decorators were still working in there. They've made a lovely job. New furniture, beds and accessories of good quality and tastefully done. They also now have quality shower gel and soap, and I'm very impressed.
The restaurant/bar is still the same, its decor is tired but ok and reasonably clean. The food is standard carvery quality, and is fine and of a reasonable price. They've also improved the breakfast with little touches like proper coffee and a little more choice. Still no cold meats, fresh fruit or yogurts, but they also have a cooked breakfast and all in all it's very good value for bed and breakfast.
They don't have many staff on, but I was there mid-week so maybe at busier times they have more on. Those they had were jacks and jills of all trades, but managed just fine.
It's a heritage building so access to all but one room in the hotel part is difficult for those with mobility issues, and there's no lift. Reception is only staffed until 10pm, but they do tell you that on booking.
All in all a nice reasonably priced hotel I'll be happy to stay there again.

Stayed here in May 2013 as it was very near my daughters house and reasonably priced compared to other hotels nearby. We had read reviews which weren't exactly glowing but decided to take a chance as we were only staying a couple of nights. On first glance the hotel was lovely from the outside. We booked in, and went to our room (No 14 double room).

The room was practical but could have done with some updating. The bed was comfortable, The drawer front came off at some point but wasnt really a problem. There was a small spider nestled in the net curtain, and the bathroom wasn't the cleanest. There was black marks around the toilet bowl near the rim. Water wasn't that hot either. Wouldn't want to stay here for more than a couple of nights, but as I said ok for a short break for the price. The carvery was ok, but not much choice as that's all they served in the restaurant. The breakfast (included in the price) was ok. You had a choice of cooked breakfast or cereal and juice tea and coffee. Glasses could have done with a clean and the place needed a dusting but wasn't enough to put us off going in there. Loved the cats outside the tea room. The gardens next door which are free to enter were well worth a visit. Was really quiet at night, Although people walking around the hotel banging doors are a problem and the internet connection was next to useless.

All that said we are thinking of booking another trip and staying here again so wasn't that bad.

Room No.2 is a twin room. The bed creaked every time my husband moved or turned, which seemed like the whole night through, then about 6.00am, there was so much noise outside, think it was refuse collection. 2 fried eggs left on hotplate, in morning, which looked like imitation plastic, where they had been sitting there so long.

Room Tip: Don;t have Room 2.

Nice and quiet Hotel, Not far from the main A259, but you cannot hear it.
Room was clean and tidy,
The hotel rooms were across from the main reception building, which was a bit strange to
start with, but found it o.k.
Only thing I did not like was, the bedroom door did not have a security spy hole. would not
be able to see who knocked at door, without opening first.

The restaurant was a carvery, and found the food very good.
All the staff were friendly and service good.

This is a very average Carvery experience. The food is reasonably priced and the location is pretty. The beef we had was very dry and tough. The larger selection is limited. There was no lemon for the drinks served in a dirty glass. Wouldn't rush back!

We had our wedding reception on the 23rd March the venue was lovely but the way we were treated and the service we received was awful.
Throughout the whole process, they were very slow at responding to us, and they weren't at all flexible with anything.
On the day, we arrived and there was no-one there to deal with us, just 1 guy who said 'well I have been lumbered with this' and didn't really care. All the glasses laid out for our welcome drinks were filthy and we had to ask for these to be cleaned. People weren't offered a welcome drink when they arrived, they were holding the champagne back to see who would notice that welcome drinks were available, and then told us that all the champagne had gone. I think about 10% of people we have asked got a welcome drink - £450 well spent!!
The food laid out, was not only an hour late coming out (so many of our guests had to leave early and never ate it), but it was of a very poor quality with no serving utensils to serve the pastas or salads. No-one managed the food, so all the popular stuff ran out very early and there was just rubbish left for everyone else. We had repeated communication making sure that there was gluten free food provided for the few people we had with this allergy. Nothing was provided even though it was promised. We paid for 160 guests to eat food, about 130 people ate food, and most people were still hungry when it had gone!
We complained afterwards about all of they, and they just didn't care. Because it looks like such a nice venue, and they are booked out most weekends of the year, they aren't actually concerned about providing a good service, and whether people leave there happy with what they have paid out quite a lot of money for.
This place DOES NOT deserve to be a busy wedding venue - absolutely disgraceful

My partner and I visited the Carvery on a Sunday afternoon. On entering the restaurant, we read a sign asking us to wait to be seated...we waited and waited, although staff saw us standing there, none of them acknowledged us, when somebody did finally bother to come over they told us to find a seat, restaurant had around 8 people in it. We were asked by the waitress if we would like drinks and with that she brought over our buffet ticket. We then went to find plates and get food. I had to remove many a dirty looking plate with many scratches on before I found a plate I wanted to eat from, we then waited and waited until the chef could be bothered to leave the kitchen to serve up our meat. He asked my partner what meat he would like, he replied he would like a little of all of them please, to which he was told he could only have a choice of 2 (out of four), we then went onto the vegetables and what looked like they had been sat there for a week, they were dry, brown and luke warm. Although my partner says the gammon was lovely and well cooked, we have to say the rest of the food was horrible so much so that we will not be visiting for the carvery itself, which is a real shame. Verdict on staff = unfriendly with a cant be bothered attitude. Verdict on food = awful, with rations on meat and dried up vegetables, I have had better from the local take away :-( to top it all the waiter told us the veg HAD been sat there for some time - at least the staff were honest :-/ Dont waste your money on this so called 'carvery', instead visit the beautiful gardens of High down and enjoy a slice of cake and a hot beverage at the very friendly tea rooms :-)
