The wind was howling, rain was lashing in diagonal rods and every parking space in the Steyne was taken. I had no option but to drop off my elderly, infirm Mum at the front entrance and drive round until I found a suitable space! Yes, parking here is a problem.
On my eventual return, the welcome from the young man on reception was friendly, the ambiance pleasant and the temperature throughout, warm. We were taken directly through to the Indigo restaurant - what a delight with its real wood floors, well-padded, high-backed seats in very tastefully upholstered multi-coloured material set around small tables nicely set with candles and flowers.
Our waitress for the evening arrived immediately, set us down at the table, arranged our linen napkins on our laps and gave us the menu. The gin and tonic and Peroni arrived swiftly as we set about reading the menu with some difficulty - the lighting was just a little on the low side.
I like short menus - to me it shows the chef is passionate about his offerings being fresh. This was the case here - a limited a la carte and table d'hote menu. We liked the look of what the latter had to offer and ordered.
Our starter of seared scallops arrived, beautifully presented on a long rectangular plate. The shellfish were cooked to perfection and the mushroom and spinach beneath was an excellent accompaniment.
The main courses of Steak Diane and Coq au Vin were similarly well presented, well-cooked and flavoursome, although Mum did say that her chicken was warm not hot. The chunky chips served alongside my steak were perfection - crisp outside and fluffy on the inside!
Desserts were a long time arriving - but well worth the wait - my orange and lemon posset was divine. Mum's ice cream selection was much enjoyed too.
The service we received from our waitress was superb. She was attentive, without being intrusive, friendly, and efficient.
Worthing's best-kept secret? It must be as there were only six other diners in the restaurant that evening - mid week in October - mind you, the weather probably kept many folks in that night.
