I have escaped! Couldn't wait to be out of the place. Cromwell Lodge is a hotel I will definitely not be visiting again. I'm afraid I cannot share the opinions of the readers who have rated this hotel well.
The location alone is super. End of.
Where shall I begin...I think a list will suffice:
1 No air-con in the bedrooms
2 Thick duvets on the beds at the end of July...?
3 Pillows reek of perspiration
4 Really poor quality food at breakfast time and in the evening
5 Best description of the food - stodge
6 The wedges and dip were chunks of badly cooked potato with a tasteless slime
7 The children's meals were presented in oven dishes...who would serve meals in dishes straight from the oven to children????
8 The draught beer was warm
and finally, the ultimate insult...
9 The draught Guinness was warm, yuk, yuk, yuk!!!!!
Sorry, definite no go

Room Tip: Don't choose one!

Having only a month earlier visited this hotel following an appointment with the Solicitors over the road, we returned hoping to find the wonderful Eastern European lady who made the original breakfast experience something we gladly shared online when she handed us a card at the end of our meal.
For £5.99 each we were treated to a full English breakfast with refill cups of coffee and toast if we wanted, but it was so good we didn't have to ask for more - the fact is we were offered it and the service was above and beyond.
We were also given fruit juice on the same premise and left feeling like we'd found the perfect breakfast stop off in future, even if the current deal expired.
The same Solicitors last week and we returned because we couldn't imagine going anywhere else following our previous visit.
We walked into the same restaurant and it felt like a horror movie where everyone had disappeared as it was a complete ghost town.
It took 15 minutes of walking around shouting "Hello, hello is anyone there?" to encounter human life.
We were eventually joined by an equally bemused resident who too had been looking for someone to serve him, so we decided to leave, but could have emptied the bar of its bottles and cash or anything else we'd wanted and been on our way quite easily in the time we'd waited - it was only as we were half out the door that an irritated young brunette woman came out clearly flustered and apologised as she'd "been left on her own to handle the whole place"...Now this is NOT a B&B, it's a massive hotel in the centre of Banbury with a lot of rooms and massive gardens etc...."Are you cooking aswell" I asked, as that would have been the final straw, but she confirmed that they had a chef still.
She told us to wait and that she'd be in the next room when we wanted to order.
We already knew what we wanted so we went to look for her in the room she said she'd be in and spent another 15 minutes shouting threw doors and corridors before we found her and placed an order.
We had a three year old with us growing more impatient by the minute so we chose to sit outside and eat where she could play, and when the food came out we were given a plate with a paltry amount of food that would look at home on a Weight Watchers advert....The woman was irritable and short with us, and when we asked if the breakfast came with toast or drinks she rudely replied "No, they're extra", so we ordered the drinks (previously free WITH refills) and just decided to knock the toast on the head....Only when we finished the meal off in under two minutes did my wife decide to go inside and get a menu which we ordered from.
Inside it, in no uncertain terms it states that all breakfasts are served with toast, and we also noticed that we'd paid far more than previously and that that the single sausage we'd ordered for our toddler (that did come with a slice of bread) had been charged at around £8.00 - It was £30 for four of us including the little one and lasted under two minutes - To not get a drink and toast for that amount of money is nothing short of criminal and it's such a shame as we'd recommended it to so many people beforehand. My wife was not happy and as we left she hung back to say something and to complain about the experience.....but guess what....?

On the 20th. of July 2013 i had a birthday party for my daughter. Everything went smoothly, i had great help with the planning, and on the night all was superb. Bar staff, waiters/waitresses were so helpful, nothing was too much trouble to make it a memorable event, the buffet was excellent and served just when we required it. I recommend this hotel for any event, i will be booking again for my son's birthday. A big thanks to Bruce and all he's team..

Well situated on the main through road of Banbury. Traffic can be noisy in the front rooms and we would imagine rear rooms would be affected by weddings. However we had a very warm welcome, were given a choice of rooms which were all clean and well-equipped in a traditional style. The staff were professional and friendly. Breakfast was locally sourced and freshly cooked. Bar and restaurant areas were pleasant. Very good value for money

Room Tip: Check whether there is a wedding on. The rooms at the back look onto the gardens which can be busy...

It was my first trip to Banbury and Cromwell Lodge is ideally situated just yards away from Banbury Cross.
The hotel was an old inn which fitted the character of the town perfectly, first impressions were good.
We were welcomed by a pleasant young receptionist who explained the car park, the breakfast times, the restaurant availability etc.
Our room, a "superior" room, overlooked the back of the hotel and the garden. Directly below our window (and the windows of all the bedrooms at the back) was a permanent marquee for functions which fortunately wasn't being used otherwise it would have been VERY noisy.
The bedroom was nicely furnished and a decent size although the furniture is beginning to look a little bit worn.
The bathroom was again quite large and clean, however, there was some stained grouting above the bath and toiletries were lacking, for a "superior" room I would have expected more than one small bottle of shower gel... NO SOAP!
Apart from the toiletries, my only negative comments are that the car park is small and you have to arrive early (or late) to get a space and the other is the height of the corridor, I'm only 5'7" and I had to duck in one place!
The breakfasts are excellent, the staff are helpful and friendly and the restaurant was good value and good food.
Just be aware, if there's a function on, I would imagine its very noisy. Having said that, I'd definitely return there.
