“A Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Uplands House. Our hostess, "Poppy", greeted us warmly on arrival at her beautiful home and, after showing us our enchanting room, invited us to join her for homemade cake and tea. Apart from being a super cook and hostess, Poppy has good knowledge of this beautiful part of England and we found her suggestions on places to visit and eat, most helpful. Surrounded by picturesque gardens and magnificent countryside, Uplands House is a terrific place to stay and we certainly hope to return again in the near future.

Visitors to Uplands House are in for a treat. It's a lovely old house situated on a lane lined with ancient trees. The gardens are just beautiful, with cows grazing picturesquely just beyond the fence. City dwellers will enjoy the quietest, soundest sleep they've ever had. This gem is graciously run by Lady Poppy Cooksey, who could not be more welcoming or accommodating. The rooms are comfortable, private, and thoughtfully arranged. Do not miss the sublimely deep old bathtubs. A very good breakfast was served with style and featured eight delicious varieties of homemade jam! Poppy even showed me how to make it in the kitchen.

We arrived tired, having hired a car at Heathrow after an overnight flight and driven straight to Uplands House. An afternoon nap and a few cups of tea from Poppy's silver teapot, however, and we were good to go. It's close to the touristy Cotswolds villages (Stow on the Wold, Moreton on Marsh, the Slaughters, etc.) but also to some perfectly beautiful little towns (Wroxton, Edgehill Ratley) that don't make it into the guidebooks. Be sure to have supper one night at the Rose & Crown in Edgehill Ratley. It's about four miles from Uplands House and is the ancient, wonderful small-town pub you've always dreamed of.

I was very glad that we did not stay in one of the frenetic tourist-track Cotswolds towns; staying at Uplands House was one of the best experiences of our UK holiday.

Room Tip: Choose the Chinese room if you like Chippendale beds and a fine view of grazing cows!

It's the first time we have stayed in a Wolsley Lodge where the owners dine with you and after this experience it will not be the last. "Poppy" is a great hostess and a wonderful cook.

I would highly recommend Uplands House to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat in the English countryside. We stayed here for five nights while attending the F1 race at Silverstone. Uplands House is a fine home with a great family atmosphere and the gardens are a delight, full of interest and colour. Upon our arrival, we were immediately placed at ease by the warm and friendly owners, Lady Poppy Cooksey and her husband Dr. Graham Paul, both of whom are very accomplished and interesting individuals. Poppy and Graham are wonderful hosts, it felt like we were staying with friends. Poppy even booked our restaurant table for us at the Chequers only a few miles away, which we would highly recommend. The whole ambiance was hugely relaxing. We stayed in the Chinese Room which was comfortably furnished with a fabulous view of the countryside. The guest sitting room where we were offered tea and warm homemade cake upon arrival and each day thereafter, was very comfortable, and the dining room was lovely.
Breakfast was between 8 am and 10am. Poppy and Graham cooked a superb breakfast. Poppy’s homemade jams and marmalade were particularly appreciated. Anything was available from fresh fruit and yogurt to a full English breakfast. Local produce ensured that the breakfasts were wonderful. Dinner was available for £30 per person and there is an extensive wine list. We enjoyed dinner twice during our stay, joined by other guests and were served four delicious courses. Poppy was kind enough to share several of the recipes for foods that we savoured.
If you want to explore the local area, there are plenty of walks nearby. If you’ve got a car, there are a number of Cotswold villages to explore including the quintessential Oxfordshire villages of Broadway, Wroxton and Ratley. Stratford-upon-Avon is only a few miles away. We enjoyed a dinner and several memorable drinks at the idyllic Rose and Crown (1098) in Ratley just a mile or so from Uplands House.
Everything was as we had hoped - excellent informal welcome, quietly helpful owners, top class accommodation, wonderful location and food that was definitely very special. Uplands House offers guests a peaceful retreat away from the stresses of modern life.

Having wanted to visit the Cotswolds since a school trip to Stratford upon Avon years ago, my husband and I simply went on line for somewhere to stay!!
We found Uplands House and spoke with Poppy by phone while she was in her greenhouse looking after her tomatoes... we immeadiatly clicked!. She offered us a very good deal and we booked in for three nights and dinner on the first night. "Quite right too" she said, "you need to check out the chef before committing to further dinners".
We arrived to the most beautiful serene homely house with magnificent gardens and a hostess with the most welcoming smile. Our room was the entire the top of the house which was really a suite plus a lovely bathroom. The bedroom was full of warmth and character with a very comfortable bed and lots of personal photos of the family and lovely furniture. The views were fantastic.
We were invited for tea at 5pm out in the garden where the silver service and divine orange cake were produced, We met two other couples and Poppy held court while we all introduced ourselves and she organised the timing for dinner and breakfast in the morning.
Pre dinner drinks made us feel like we had been invited to a weekend party by an dear friend, we all got on famously and Poppy and Graham made sure that on one was left out.
Dinner was delicious, 6 guests plus some flying friends of Graham's had an excellent dinner in the garden, with great food and lovely wines.
Breakfast turned into a two hour meal in Uplands House with delicious food, lots of tea and conversation, not to mention all Poppy's home made jams and marmalade.
We loved every bit of our visit, venturing out into lovely towns and villages in the glorious summer sunshine. Mid Summers Night Dream was playing in Stratford which was electric.
We guests all left Uplands at various stages, all with many happy memories, and that is what Poppy does best, she effortlessly brings people together from all walks of life and from all over the world, and creates a little bit of magic.

I spent three days and nights at this lovely Cotswold country house in a delightful suite of rooms with ever comfort. The views of the grounds, the rose gardens, organic vegetable garden and the country side are lovely and we were blessed with sunny day and warm nights. Lady Cooksey, known to all as Poppy, and her husband, Graham, make sure that you have a proper breakfast with anything your heart desires and the supers are splendid as Poppy is an outstanding cook just as her name might imply. She is also a champion fencer as is Graham. They take the best care of their guests and make the evening gathering fizz with good conversation in which they also take part. After being there for three days and nights I did not want to return to London and look forward to my next visit. I highly recommend staying at Uplands House.

Room Tip: The top floor has a large family suite and the other bedrooms were very pretty.
