“Delightful guest house in good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

Stayed for two nights while visiting Buxton. The owners were very welcoming and friendly, and the room was perfect. The house is in easy walking distance to the centre of the town. Comfortable bed, no traffic noise. Delicious breakfast.

The owners are kind and welcoming.
This guesthouse is absolutely immaculate, exceptionally clean and ones needs, as a guest, have been thoughtfully considered, the decor is, however, very 'dated'.
Breakfast was excellent with a fine choice of menu.
However my stay was spoilt by the extremely uncomfortable mattress on my bed, I found it difficult to sleep as it was like laying on a 'plank'!

Room Tip: Ask for a comfortable bed!

We stayed for one night only, with the new owners and their assistant, Chalky the dog. The family room was spacious, with a massive king size bed and double sofa bed. The room was comfortable and had everything you could possibly need (including plasters for emergencies)! It was a short walk (5mins) into the town with all the restaurants & bars you could want. Breakfast was fantastic - huge choice and nothing was too much trouble. My only bugbear was that the pillows were a little square & hard (but I have never stayed in anywhere where they aren't) !!! So I would definitely recommend this B&B. Friendly owners, ideal location, comfortable accommodation and fantastic breakfast. Thankyou - we will return....

Stayed over for one night. Feburary 2012
Very Friendly, very clean and great food.
We went to the Opera house to see a show and the The Old Manse was the perfect choice, close enough to walk back and enjoy a couple of drinks on the way.

We stayed 1 night at The Old Manse. Sally (landlady) was very friendly and welcoming. We were given on of the rooms on the top floor which was a nice size and lovely and warm. The bed was nice & comfortable and the bathroom provided with everything we needed.

Thank you for making our short stay so relaxing!

We stayed 3 nights in this guest house. It was spotlessly clean, the room was very comfortable. They are very friendly people. Breakfast was very nice with a nice selection.
It was in a only a few minutes walk to the tow. Lots of nice places to eat in the evening. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Think all rooms are quiet in this guest house.

Positive points first - excellent breakfast, very pleasant & helpful landlady. We stayed for 3 nights in a large room (decor rather dated) with a superking bed, settee, two tub chairs with small table. The bed was very comfortable. Only a 5 minute walk from the market place. Now the negative points - it was the tiniest shower room we'd ever experienced. The shower cubicle had a plastic curtain which managed to adhere to your legs during showering. The sink was extremely small and with taps which you could hardly get your hands under. My husband found wet shaving very awkward and washing your face & teeth cleaning was particularly difficult as there was a large soap dispenser just over the sink in the perfect position for hitting your forehead when trying to bend over the sink! Also the small mirror was positioned high up so I had to stand on tiptoe (I'm average height of 5ft 6ins). The wooden shelf just under the mirror gave another opportunity to bang your head! The shower-room door was such a tight fit that brute force was required to close it. The complimentary handwash and shower/shampoo gel were housed in large plastic wall mounted dispensers and didn't lather up very well - resorted to using our own. The guest information invited you to bring up any problems and they would try to deal with it. We duly presented ourselves to make our dis-satisfaction with shower-room known and to see if it was possible to change rooms. The landlady seemed genuinely surprised and said no-one had ever complained before. Her husband suddenly appeared and was extremely defensive & aggressive - not a good attitude for running a guesthouse. Fortunately his wife managed to persuade him to leave it to her. We showed her the problem and she said there wasn't room for a larger sink & a sliding door on the cubicle. She did show us another room which had a larger sink (still a plastic curtain), but the bed was much smaller than we're used to, so decided to stay put. I'm very surprised that sub-standard shower-rooms attract a 4 star rating.

Room Tip: Avoid room 6! Unless the superking bed outweights the cramped shower room

Dear Julia R

Thank you for your comments, which we do act upon. As such, the door hinges have been adjusted and now closes easily. Ease of closure has been added to our checklist when the room is cleaned.

With regard to your other comments, we have just had our yearly assessment by Quality in Tourism and after inspecting all our rooms, we have again achieved 4 Star Silver, despite even more stringent rules. Please find an extract from their report:
"Overall bathrooms offer good space, with well tiled shower areas and shower curtains fitted.
Walls are well decorated. Fittings have been well maintained with shelving and magnifying mirror well placed. Overhead lighting is good, light to the basin area is provided and a heated towel rail, has recently been fitted in all rooms. Towels are excellent quality and bath sheets have been provided. Wall mounted dispense units of hand and shower lotion are in place, which have not been tested on animals. Well packaged cotton wool pads and emery board and a covered dish of cotton wool balls and a bathrobe enhance the overall quality. Flooring is very suitable.

Bedrooms overall provide very good space to use the facilities. Decoration is well presented with papered walls and attractive picture rail, well decorated."
