“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2011

paid £64 for one nights bed and breakfast
excellent location right by the opera house
check-in great
weather was bad so ate in the hotel - excellent - couldnt fault the food or service
room was fine - quirky sloping on the flooringing although couldnt complain as this hotel is very old and full of history
great nights sleep - bathroom great with a good selection of personals!
lovely cooked breakfast - plenty of choice for a 3-star hotel
only critisicm I could have is the main bar area was closed for a private function on the sat night
highly recommended!

Just returned from a fabulous nights stay at this hotel to celebrate a birthday. My husband and I stayed in Room 26 (Mary's Bower). We were both taken aback with the history of this building, the size of the room, friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. We have stayed in many hotels across the world and this is definitely one of the best we have experienced. We can't wait to revisit!

After booking to get married at The Old Hall this September, we thought we would have a night away and try out the food, wine and overall experience. As soon as we arrived it was absolutely magical, the hotel was very clean and smelt very fresh. There was all you needed in your room, we only stopped in a standard double, but was brilliant and the shower was one of the best ever!!!!It even had a massage setting on it! We ate in the wine bar later that evening and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was gorgeous and the wine choice was extensive. This is an extremely old hotel with lots of quirky features, such as uneven floors, the Orchestra Pit, low doorways and lots of history to read up on in the main hallway. Ok, so some of the decoration could have been a bit more spruced up, but i think they are in the process of this, the rooms if not are a little over priced, but Buxton is a popular tourist place and this is a very special Hotel. Breakfast was lovely and we was served quickly and without feeling rushed. There was lovely local produce on the menu and lots of choice!
We can safely say that we can't wait to get married here in September and it can't come quick enough!!! If we manage to get a reasonable deal again i would like to stop again before the wedding!

We love a hotel with a bit of history and this has it with Mary Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick. It is just across from The Pavillion and the Opera House and you can fill up with buxton spring water just down the road. The hotel has two lovely comfortable lounges at the front, one with a tv and one with a piano. There are 2 bars and 2 restaurants so we didn't stray far from the hotel. We stayed in room 45 which has a bed so big you could fit 3 people in it and still have tons of space. It is being decorated at the moment so expect a bit of mess. The George Potter bar was a bit chilly and the young barman wasn't a very cheerful chap but other than that we loved it.

We had a night to remember at Buxton's Old Hall. Arriving tired at 8pm the welcoming facade was full of promise. Nice bath in well appointed bathroom followed by a very satisfying meal in the wine bar. The bed was huge and very comfortable, and the armchairs in the bay window a great place for long lazy breakfast. Old Hall is buzzing with 'things happening' as people come & go in the hallway downstairs, and has a feel of things having happened stretching back hundreds of years, (read about Mary Queen of Scots' prolonged stay there)... If i was Mary I'd have been more than happy to prolong my stay - Old Hall is a very happy memory.

This hotel suits Buxton perfectly: cosy and atmospheric, with creaking floorboards and plenty of charm. Please don't stay there expecting a boutique hotel or stylish decor, but what we found instead was a decent, good-sized room, very reasonably priced. The decor was dated and the bathroom was in need of an overhall, but everything was clean and we loved how historic everything felt.

The hotel's location is fantastic, right in the centre of the town, adjacent to the beautiful Cresent and the Pavillion Gardens. We really enjoyed dinner in the wine bar, which is relaxed and cosy with good service, an unpretentious menu and lovely puddings.

We would definitely stay here again. The Old Hall wouldn't pass muster as a city hotel or a country house hotel, but it suits a winter's night in Buxton very well indeed.

Me & Lou had a night at the Old Hall, we had a dinner bed and breakfast deal. We arrived at 12 noon were given a carpark ticket for 24hrs, had a wonder arond town had lunch at Nat's Kitchen (good beer and great club sandwich). Got our room at 2pm, lovely 4 poaster, big room, big bathroom. The wine bar was busy all day great food coming out, good service and friendly.
Evening was good served in a room because restaurant had a party night on but still good service free water given at table and warm bread.
Flowers in hotel done my bosses daughter quality, rang reception before travel to check on roads really helpful.
Would go back for the view from breakfast window over park, spot on. If in buxton call in for a drink you won/t be dissapointed.

Enjoy...
