We stayed at the Old hall for two nights in the middle of the Gilbert and Sullivan festival in August 2004. The hotel's location is excellent, being right in front of the Opera House, however that is the only good thing I could say about it.
The hotel charged £105.00 per room per night to include breakfast - it seems expensive, however when you want to stay in a prime location at one of the busiest times of the year you expect to have to pay for it.
The room was adequate although it looked in need of major refurbishment; the furniture was old and starting to fall to bits! The bathroom was again adequate - quite acceptable for a 3* - except for the shower. The temperature of the water here could range from freezing to scalding in the space of a second. The best you could hope for was a cold shower with a few bursts of hot. However this was not very likely to occur without several scalding bursts.
Breakfast on both mornings was poor. The first morning they were obviously busy, we got the last table in the restaurant and breakfast took over an hour! This made us late in meeting the rest of our party - most of whom hadn't stayed at the Old Hall. The cooked breakfast was basic, greasy and cold, there were only two pots of jam on the table, one of which had already been opened and part used by a previous customer. We didn't complain as we were already late for our meeting.
On the second morning breakfast was quieter (possibly because we went down earlier) however there were cups missing from the table and only one pot of jam. We asked the waitress for another cup whilst we were sitting down at the table; whilst she was getting that (from a servery just behind her) we saw the jam and when she came back we also asked for more jam. She brought just one pot of marmalade and when we asked if it was possible to have two marmalades said "Is there anything else you want? This is tge third time you've sent me back."
We were attending a convention that was having some events at the hotel. All the meals here struck us as expensive and ranged from poor to acceptable.
The hotel had over promised on the equipment they could provide for the convention - They had offered us the use of things like a CD player that they then could not provide.
Would I stay there again? No - out of choice, although if I attended another convention at the hotel I would possibly consider it as an expensive and unpleasant necessity.
