The good, the bad and the ugly
We stayed here for four nights as part of the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in August in one of the Executive rooms. It is a lovely old building, very well positioned in the centre of Buxton with the Opera House, Pavilion and a lovely park on the doorstep. The shopping areas and a choice of restaurants are within a 5 minute stroll. Parking, which is limited, has to be paid for at £3 per day.
It might be an historic building but that is no excuse for the decrepitude and lack of cleanliness seen throughout the hotel. Our room was large but the window frames were held together by a mixture of mould, dirt and flaking paint and the glass panes were so dirty, inside and out, that it was difficult to see through them. The bath surrounds were also mouldy and the bathroom itself, with its very unattractive plastic panels instead of tiles, needed a complete refurbishment just to bring it up the standard of the cheapest motels. The room was not vacuumed once during our stay.
Our room was on the 2nd floor and there is just one small temperamental lift; there is wifi only on the ground floor. On the plus side, the breakfasts were superb and all the staff we met were friendly, cheerful and helpful.
