“Just what the doctor ordered”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2009

Having been warned off a hotel in a neighbouring town by TripAdvisor, we saw the Lee Wood reviewed very positively. From start to finish a superb experience. After trying hard, our only quibble was that the toast racks were tarnished and could do with a clean! It is a genuine 5 minutes downhill walk to the Opera House and 5 minutes walk into open country. very reasonable restaurant prices.

I had mixed expectations from the various reviews which I guess reflect the fact that we are all different! However this hotel suited us down to the ground. We've stayed in many hotels both home and abroad. This one has a character of its own - and a very pleasant one at that. The staff were warm and relaxing - as was our room. We were offered an upgrade, despite being there for only one night, as the hotel was not busy. The room was large and very comfortably fitted out - a real home from home. Breakfast was taken in the spacious conservatory restaurant at the side of the hotel overlooking the garden. The choice and quality of food were both very good. For a price equivalent to a fairly average B&B, my wife and I agreed that this hotel was excellent value for money. If we return to Buxton in the future we will certainly aim to book here again.

We visitesd the hotel as it played host to my brother's wedding reception. The food was excellent and the staff were very attentive to the wedding party. Our room was a good size and the bathroom was clean with bath and shower.

The breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection on offer (continental, full English and more). We also went to the restaurant the night before the wedding and all enjoyed our meals.

The hotel is full of character and is the perfect backdrop for a wedding reception.

We were very lucky to be given a suite of two rooms - small sitting room with wrting desk, armchairs and television, and a spacious bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The views and the comfort were excellent, and the beds very good. We are two old friends who meet up somewhere interesting but different every year for a few days, away from our families, to catch up and enjoy ourselves sightseeing. We were both agreed that the hotel felt like home, the staff were beyond anything we could ask for in being friendly and helpful. The restaurant served excellent food and was probably the best we had during our stay. The service was exceptional and friendly - we enjoyed ourselves very much.

I took my mother who loved this old fashioned hotel, it has large and unusually well lit bedrooms. The whole place is ultra clean and the staff are very helpful. Food in the restaurant is beautifully presented. The only minor drawback is no air con and it was hot when we were there, but it is an old building so you can't have everything. Service is very good and some people anticipate your needs, rare indeed. A genuine mistake on our bill was corrected quickly.

Very comfortable, very helpful staff, all young and cheerful. Nothing was too much trouble.
Our room was large and bright and very clean.
We will certainly go back and ask for the same room.
Buxton is a very good location to stay for visiting the English treasures of historical houses. Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall are a must but there are numerous others all within a drive.

This is actually a nice, friendly and I'm sure usually, a quite hotel as alluded to by previous reviewers. Unfortunately our hopes of a relaxing stay for one night on a Saturday were dashed by the fact that we had not been informed that the hotel was hosting a wedding, and our room (number 6) was directly over the evening disco. We actually paid more for a superior room that was to be the worst room on that particular night. After eating at the local Thai restaurant (Simply Thai - very good), we had to endure two hours of room rattling, bone shaking music from directly below our room. Our complaint that we maybe we should not have been put in the deluxe room when there was a disco booked for the evening was met with "well you should have been told there was a wedding at the hotel". Unfortunately this was not communicated to us when we made the booking, so my advice is, ask the question, particularly at this time of year!
