Description: The Three Tuns dates back to the early 16th Century - although some records make even earlier reference to this, the oldest pub in Hay on Wye.Famous for its unique charm and character, Three Tuns became a popular haunt with local characters and well known personalities such as Jools Holland, Marianne Faithful, Neil Kinnock, Huw Edwards and some as infamous as the Great Train Robbers!Unfortunately the Three Tuns suffered a devastating fire in 2005, but a sympathetic restoration has brought life to the old building once again.Enjoy the huge inglenook fires, 16th century beams and the sympathetic new additions such as the garden room and large beer garden

“Great food, lovely pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

We went for food on Sunday late afternoon during Hay Festival. The pub had a good lively atmosphere, the waitresses were very helpful and pleasant, nothing was too much trouble. The food was of a very good standard, well cooked and presented.we live fairly local and would definately return.

“Not as good as usual”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

The Three Tuns is our 'go to' lunch venue when we visit Hay-on-Wye, which is usually 3 or 4 times a year.

We saw a couple of the home made burgers being delivered to the table next to us and the choice was made. They looked great!

When they arrived we added seasoning and vinegar to the chips and started on the burger. However, they weren't cooked through and we had to send them back to the kitchen. Not the end of the world.

When the plates came back to us it was apparent that the vinegar soaked chips had been refreshed with a quick dunk back in the deep fat fryer.

Now I would expect that if the kitchen has sent out food that is not cooked they would bin the whole plate and start again rather than try to salvage 'bits' of it. Chips went back and third time lucky we ended up with something edible.

In fairness the kitchen did send out some bread and olives with their compliments but please chef, if it doesn't come out right, bin it and start again.

Occasionally a mistake will happen, but as you have said, not to fix this and put it right first time around is simply not acceptable. On behalf of the team in the kitchen and Chef - a BIG sorry.

“Ok but . . . .”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Having read the reviews (which are quoted on their literature) we turned up expecting a really good culinary experience - but to be honest it was pretty mixed. Some of the food was excellent, and some was, well, average. We liked the 'feel' of the pave but given what we paid would have hoped for better and, to be honest, have found better in Hay having stayed here over the last few days. The food lacked a richness of flavour and the service was almost too quick. That said, some of it was very good but, overall, I was a little disappointed and wouldn't rush back.

Oh dear it sounds like we messed up here - really sorry ! Your comment about the food being served too quickly is taken on board and I am sorry that we failed to impress with every dish. Thanks for taking the time to leave the feedback

“Very popular for good reason”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We went here for a quick lunch while we were at the Hay festival so we didn't have a great deal of time to waste. I was expecting it to be stupidly packed but although it was busy they were dealing with it very well. We got a table & ordered our food at the bar & our lunch was served almost before I'd sat back down. Excellent service, great selection of beers & ciders & perfectly nice lunch. Simple things done well - what a concept! A great many pubs in Wales could learn a lot from this place. The building is quite lovely too.
FYI we wanted to run a 'tab' for our lunch so they asked for a card as a deposit. They sealed it in an envelope and secured it behind the bar. No doubt they've been burned by people leaving without paying in the past so I didn't blame them & I thought the way it was dealt with was very reassuring.

“just right”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

Very friendly warm welcome by staff. Cosy pub, well renovated. Can eat in the older part at the front, or the more modern part at the back. Very good selection on menu, meat, fish and veggie options. Some interesting/inventive starters and deserts. The main course was a big portion so we shared a starter and desert. We tried the desert of artichoke panna cotta, parsnip fudge, butternut squash ice cream and rhubarb compote. All I can say is...... Interesting! Not sure if it really worked but I like to try anything a bit different!! Good range of drinks too, local beers and good soft drinks. Would go back if in the area again.

Thanks for the kind comments. We try to offer a something a little different on our menu's and a shame that this didn't quite work for you. Hopefully we will be able to welcome you back at next years Hay Festival.
