I cannot say enough good things about York House and Jim and Margaret Wesley. They were our second B&B experience in the UK. The first experience was so bad that we were wondering if we should drop B&Bs altogether but our faith was restored by York House. We stayed in the Tretower room which has a lovely bay window with two wingback armchairs, a table and an incredible view of York House's lovely garden and the fields and meadows beyond. The room is immaculate and beautifully decorated with fresh flowers on the mantle and dresser each day. The tea tray and the bathroom were kept stocked with thoughtful items that made us feel like Jim and Margaret really cared about the comfort of their guests. If you are traveling by train and bus to Hay-on-Wye, there is a bus stop right across the street from York House. What could be more convenient? We stayed there over the Bank Holiday and when I was uncertain about the bus schedule, Margaret e-mailed me all the information I needed. The High Street in Hay-on-Wye is a scenic ten minute walk from York House. We are seniors and had no trouble with the distance at all. I will always remember this lovely old house and the two gracious people who welcomed a pair of tired travelers. We were so pleased with what we experienced that we are planning our next visit to the UK already and we will start our vacation at York House.

Can't decide what's better the hosts or the house.

Jim and Margaret have a splendid guest house a few minutes walk from the centre of Hay on Wye. We went down for a long weekend totally stressed out and managed to come back refreshed and relaxed.

We've stayed a few times so far this year, it's now our first choice when visiting Hay On Wye. The rooms are marvellous, the breakfasts out of this world and the hosts top class.

Treat yourself next time you are staying in Hay On Wye, stay with Jim and Margaret.

“Fabulous York House”

York House

York House is one of our top three Bed and Breakfasts. The house itself is gorgeous, very tastefully decorated but homey at the same time. Our bedroom was spacious, comfortable, clean and quiet. Breakfast was excellent (the best we had on our three week trip, with alternatives to the inevitable full English) and it was served in a beautiful dining room. Jim and Margaret are very hospitable and welcoming, truly nice people. York House is within easy walking distance to an excellent pub for evening meals and to the village centre with all its book shops. We loved this place and hope that, one day, we will be back for more than a couple of days.

“Quiet Oasis”

York House

Aug 28, 2007

We had a very nice visit at York House. First Hay-on-Wye is a wonderful town. It is noted for its concentration of used book stores. Indeed there are many inviting bookshops, some small some large. Some specializing, travel books for example. We were impressed by the number of shops specializing in antique prints and maps. So we recommend Hay for those seeking a quiet interlude. York House is blocks from the edge of the village that makes this a peaceful location. Jim and Margaret were very inviting. An early stop for us, we ended up facing an english breakfast for two straight weeks. This was our favorite breakfast. My wife also rated Jim's porridge the best. Ask him how he pulls this off. Our two rooms were very large by European standards. The rooms are decorated in typical country B&B fashion with flowered wallpaper and accessories. We appreciated the club chairs and other furniture that made it possible for the whole family to visit. We recommend Hay as part of your "decompress" Britain tour and York House for your stay in Hay.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Room size, breakfast, quiet location near town
    • Disliked — Minor point, I am more used to higher design city hotels, but target audience will like country B&B room decorating. All part of decompressing!

“Beautiful B&B”

York House

Jul 12, 2007

This B&B spoiled us for all other accommodations on our trip.
Margaret and Jim welcomed two damp and weary travelers with unsurpassed hospitality. All the rooms at the B&B are names after Welsh castles, and we had the pleasure of staying in the Tretower room. It was roomy and elegant with an unbeatable view of the garden.

When I travel back to Wales this B&B will be 1st on my list of places to stay!
