“Lovely Hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Stayed for two nights, service was excellent, food in the evening was outstanding, but the first morning breakfast could of been a bit warmer, we mentioned to the staff and the next day it was piping hot. Room was small but comfortable.

We stayed here for a couple of nights midweek. The first room we were given had a cistern on the toilet that was continuously filling up with water which was noisy and very annoying. However, once pointed out, we were moved to another room which had lovely views over the garden. Staff were very helpful and polite but were not always easy to find. We ate at the Bistro the first night and enjoyed the steaks. The second night we ate at the Blue Boar, just up the road, and I would have to say that the food there was superb with a better choice than at the Swan. We would certainly eat there again as a much nicer seting than the Bistro. The Swan could do with a bit of a make over but on the whole we had a lovely time, breakfasts lovely and we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 1 over looks garden and has lovely views - would be better if the beds were kingsize rather tha...

We had a good 2 night stay at the hotel. Our room was comfortable but rather smaller than the picture on tripadvisor. Staff were pleasant and helpful but were not always available; we were disappointed that, on one occasion, we had to wait over 10 minutes for our room key despite the fact that staff who were setting out the dining room could see us waiting at reception. We were close to following the example of the reviewer who rang the hotel on his mobile phone to attract some attention.
Our room had a comfortable bed and clean linen but was very dusty in places such as the skirting. I hope that other guests will appreciate the flower picture by my wife in the dust on the staircase window.
We did not eat at the hotel as the menu was a little limited and most of the starters were based on shellfish which tends not to agree with us.
All in all we would be happy to stay there again.

We stayed here for the weekend with our pet dog and so were allocated a room in the outer building. The room was very small and extremely warm as the heating was on full blast and windows full of condensation. The decor and state of repair left a lot to be desired and gave off a worn out look. The staircase was also very precarious - i.e. very narrow, steep and curved. The bathroom window remained open throughout because the lock was broken and the window blind was also broken so we could neither open nor close it as it stuck half way. This was rather inconvenient as the bathroom overlooked the car park and had plain glass! Parking was also a bit tricky at times and I would imagine if the hotel was full then there would be far less spaces. Some of the positives to note, staff were very polite and friendly; breakfast selection was good; the character of the hotel was quite lovely and I would imagine that in the summer the outdoor facilities would be nice to use. We ate at the hotel's Bistro the first night with a 10% discount for having booked in advance. The menu is quite limited. The starters were just 'ok' and were very small in portion size: so £9 for 3 small scallops I felt was a bit of a rip off! My main meal (Carbonara) was far from impressive in fact it was tasteless and inedible. I didn't want to make a fuss but did mention it to the waiter when he asked. I was not offered an alternative or refund. My husband's meal on the other hand was very nice (fish and real chips) and the table service was good. Part of our deal was a cream tea on arrival which we had to enquire about on the 2nd day. This was quite a pleasant Sunday afternoon treat which we took this in one of the lounges while reading the complimentary Sunday papers. We ate out in Indian restaurant nearby on the Sunday night even though we had booked at the Bistro. Although this doesn't come highly recommended (I was served the wrong meal and so had to wait for my meal to be cooked while my husband had his - which turned out to be the wrong meal anyway) I think its the only one in the town - in fact in terms of quality food places Hay appears to be lacking in this domain.
We really like Hay on Wye and had some great walks while we were there and all in all we had a pleasant break. For those who have to travel distances The Swan et al are convenient provisions for short term stays. PS if there on walks and you don't know your way around, make sure you take a map with you as the Hotel didn't have one.

Friendly staff in a cosy three star hotel. We have just returned from a two day stay at the Swan. The hotel met our expectations and exceeded them in some areas. The room in the coach house was small, but warm and comfortable. Yes, the furnishings were a little tired, and an electric shower now seems a second-class option, but it was clean and everything worked. Breakfasts were good, with cooked food done to order, none of this horrible buffet stuff. We ate in the bistro one night and were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the food and service. Despite being full the bar was too quiet and the cosy lounge too small, but these are minor details. We will definitely stay again.

We found this hotel on groupon and were very pleased with our discovery. The hotel was very easy to find, with good parking away from the main road. The staff were very helpful when we arrived and we had lovely room with tea/coffee and a really spacious bathroom. Other reviewers have commented on it looking a bit shabby and yes if you look closely there are areas which could do with updating but it can be looked over when everything else was so nice. We ate at the hotel on our first night and the service and food were fabulous. The hotel is big so even with lots of rooms occupied, it didnt feel cramped and the garden is lovely. The Wifi works downstairs only but we quite liked that. The breakfasts were lovely with lots of choice and the breakfast room was so light and airy. Hay on wye is a lovely place to visit with lots of little shops and cafes to enjoy. We would recommend to others. A real treat!

Room Tip: We had room 11 which was on the side of the hotel away from the road. No noise at all.

Had a couple of wonderful days at the Swan recently. Amy and her staff looked after us in the very best way. Exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff, great food (had a great dinner there) and spacioius rooms. Just one thing missing: Wifii in the rooms.

Room Tip: Room nr. 5 was excellent.
