“Saved our trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2014

My boyfriend and I decided to spend couple of nights in Wales right near Hay on Wye. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience so we decided to visit the village which was only 2 miles away. We were lucky enough to walk into the pub full of awesome and friendly people and later decided to stay in the hotel. Had a lovely room, awesome breakfast, the staff was so incredibly friendly and helpful. Definitely recommending to everybody! Thank you for saving our trip!

This was a trip down memory lane, we lived in Hay nearly 30 years ago and had a party to celebrate our wedding in Kilverts Hotel. Then it was newly refurbished and the epicentre of local life, it is just about bang in the centre of the town.

It is now looking quite jaded and needs a bit of a tidy up, that said our room was excellent with a decent bathroom and high enough up to give a decent view over the town.

On a positive note the breakfast was excellent and, at £100 for two with breakfast not a long off a Premier Inn price in a much nicer environment.

The bar was disappointing, whilst it was absolutely bunged at lunchtime, when we got back from dinner at about 10:30 there were only three souls in there watching tv. The local beer was excellent and the cheapest round of the night.

Whilst it could do with a bit of a tidy up, you can not beat the location.

Great location for visiting Hay on Wye, but the Inn is pretty run down and understaffed. Bar was very busy when we arrived so had to wait several minutes for someone to check us in, Our room was small but clean but noisy at night mainly due to social club opposite. Breakfast was almost inedible. Wouldn't stay there again on next visit to Hay on Wye.

We went to the Kilverts with another couple of friends. Our room was large, very dark though, twin beds been made into a king but duvet barely fitted the bed then! Newly refurbished bathroom - nice but rails kept falling off walls, and handle was broke on door. The lock to our room was no working properly - loose and looked like the door had been kicked in sometime! Our friends 1st room was very smelly, their 2nd room had a dirty toilet, so 3rd time lucky- the room was fine but in the newly refurbished bathroom the towel rail and toilet roll holder fell off, and the shower head was not secure. When we mentioned these problems on departure the girl just said they were aware of maintenance problems but had not had time to carry them out - Why charge £90 a room then? There was no ice for in the drinks in the bar, and when we wanted a drink at 10.30pm was told the til was cashed up so couldn't serve us. Why not offer us a drink and charge it to the rooms? Lost out on £30 there! Breakfast was plentifull but cold. On departure the girl on reception said It would have been cheaper to have booked it through the hotel rather than booking.com. I did inform her that I rang 3 times, the first time they were busy so couldn't talk, then I left 2 answer phone messages where I did not receive a call back so in desperation I did it through booking.com!!!!! I just feel that as this hotel is right in the centre of Hay, it should be doing really well, but apart from us four there was only one more couple staying and if I wouldn't have done it through booking.com the previous day, they would have been the only ones staying. I am sorry to say that I think the Kilverts will be out of business within months with their attitude, which is a great shame.

Kiverts was a good place to stay, drink, relax, enjoy the beer garden and have food... now the beer garden is a wreck... the place is run down and untidy ... the atmosphere has diminished... the staff are not well trained.... what a shame ... the good point is the range of beers on tap but they are expensive ... The location of Kilverts is superb so come on Hay on Wye we deserve better than this ...

Kilverts occupies probably the best location in Hay - bang in the centre in a little square with parking right outside, and until the current family took over, I believe some seven years ago, it was one of the most popular locations in the town with both visitors and locals alike.

Since then however it's been downhill all the way, the building is neglected and run down, peeling paint, broken ice machines, wonky showers, missing light bulbs, building rubble scattered in the yard, junk in the drawers and wardrobes - in fact random detritus all over the show.

And the air of neglect and general lack of love extends to the guests as well where anything is too much trouble.

The staff try their best but are clearly under the cosh and seem to be always looking over their shoulder, in fact a chef was fired or walked out whilst we were there.

A thoroughly depressing experience, as one put upon member of staff said - 'it's like Fawlty Towers without the funny bits',

One can only hope that the current owners get bored and someone takes over who can really breath some life and love back into what should be the destination of choice in an iconic location, until such time avoid at all costs.

Stayed here for a single night over the weekend, off road parking in the residents car park was a relief, as the pub is in a very small square and our motorcycles felt a little vulnerable at the front.
We were advised that it can get lively in the village at the weekend, but didn't see the need for the 'warning', as this is first and foremost a pub, and I should hope that you are allowed to enjoy yourself in Hay On Wye, or is there some Middle Ages un-repealed law banning it ?
The greeting was friendly and we were shown to our rooms, which were fine. Our room was great, but I believe the other room our party used only had a hand held shower (no wall mount), nothing a few screws couldn't fix, but not a deal breaker.
Our rooms were to the rear, so were quiet, but I can see that the rooms at the front might be less peaceful as they overlook the square. That said, I didn't think the village was rowdy or unacceptably noisy.
The bar area is great and there was a nice choice of ales. The service was excellent and very friendly.
We ate in the bar area and were impressed with the food, although the Lasagna looked like it had been kept warm for a while.
On first sight of the menu, it seems a touch pricey, but I think it was well worth it for the general quality of the food.
Breakfast was great, again excellent service.
I can't really find fault with this Inn, without being over critical. Is it perfect ? no, but would I stay here again ? Absolutely and would recommend it without hesitation.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear are away from the square, so would be quieter, but I didn't think the noise at...
