“Fantastic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2014

This Hotel is in a fantastic location if you have a car. We were saved a very long walk with our cases by a couple offering us a lift up the 1 mile at least long drive. There is a shorter route along the riverbank into Dunkeld of around 20 minutes but not with cases. The food, was excellent both at Dinner on the couple of nights we were there and also at breakfast. The Staff were very friendly and helpful. It is advisable also to book for Dinner in the morning as it can become very busy especially if there is a wedding on in the function suite.
Some of the furnishings and décor are a bit tired and could do with upgrading but we felt that this might have been the contributing factor to the rustic charm of the old manor house. Our bedroom could have done with a chest of drawers as there was a lack of drawer space but fortunately we were only there for a couple of nights so did manage. We would certainly go back again. A beautiful spot so peaceful and quiet away from the city hubbub. Spa and swimming pool and outdoor activities also catered for.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the River Tay.

We respect the opinion of this guest’s response on trip advisor and we are in direct contact with the bride and groom in connection with this wedding which the bride has described in general as a great day and has praised many of the hotel team. We do accept that there were some confusion over the pre wedding changing room and the service of coffee in the evening reception which were not as had been expected and we have acknowledged our failure and apologised to the party. We will make things right with them in resolving their concerns.
The hotel is a popular wedding venue and we are proud of the levels of satisfaction and service that we deliver to over 50 weddings each year. We take personally any shortcomings in our performance and recognise the high importance of the day to the families concerned. Whilst we are already in the process of making things right with this wedding couple I am also happy to speak directly with the groom’s mother to offer my apology should she wish to contact me directly.

The best of this place? By far the situation, everything around the hotel is breathtaking the river nearby is just a beauty. Great place to relax or have outdoors activities.

The bad? The hotel is more than dated. Some weird damp smell near the entrance that makes you think about the same place in winter... no nice.
Carpets look terrible too, and most of the furniture inside our room had dents everywhere.
Bed was quite noisy too, creaking like it was too old for words.

Our room was described as "with views to the river" in true was more like views to the carpark.
Breakfast was average as best; we tried to have dinner the first night but they told us that, as we didn't have reservation, that was impossible and that trying to order on the bar could lead us to a wait of more than two hours.
We decided then to take our car and went to different place to have our dinner, to another hotel nearby, The Atholl Arms Hotel. The service there was far better, to the extend of decide that first day of trying that hotel if we decide to came back to this area.

We never tried anymore the restaurant on the Hilton, so I could not tell if is good or bad really.
But if you decide to stay in this hotel and use the restaurant be aware of how busy it is apparently.

I rate this hotel with 3 of 5 because the personnel on the reception and the beautiful place the hotel is situated.

Room Tip: Try another place

Dear Rafael B
We are a very busy food and beverage department and booking table is always advisable before arrival, but we are sorry you were not able to sample out chefs delights as we are very proud of our kitchen team. I am unsure as to what the smell was on the day you arrived as this is certainly not normal around our reception area. Hope you will come back again.
Kind Regards

We stayed for three nights and were taken by surprise at the beauty of this place. The grounds are vast and there are lots of walking routes, bikes are apparently available at the health club for use on these tracks too. It is a gorgeous 20 min stroll into Dunkeld along the river and you come out by the stunning cathedral. There are some great places to eat in town, the fish and chip shop is great and there is a super deli too. We did eat in the hotel and the food was good.

The hotel is rather dated and in need of updating. The rooms are adequate but probably unchanged from the 60/70's. the health club is very tatty but he equipment looks fairly new. Our bed sheets had holes in them. One day they did not service our room and the beds were never made. Overall, the hotel could be better.

However the location is so beautiful I found myself forgiving it all.

Room Tip: We were in the extension, it was quiet and fine.

Residing nearby and as a frequent diner (but currently not regular) and in the company of a group of friends we had dinner last evening (23/08/14). What was first noticed was the refurbishment that had occurred lately which was okay but it could not be rated higher; the new carpeting, in particular, well, whoever chose it should be wrapped in it and thrown in the river. While previously the décor looked a tad tired the current refurbishment has not improved the ambience. It was soon to be discovered that a new deputy manager was in post (the previous one created a disaster) so hopefully the new incumbent will try to return to the Saturday night Ballroom dancing which was a regular and thoroughly enjoyable feature for many years prior to the arrival of the previous deputy manager. Originally the hotel had tartan pattern carpets with complimentary curtains and pictures, and with excellent soft Scottish background music or modern traditional romantic music which proved to be a great occasion for a weekend evening's dinner. At eight o'clock a group would appear (usually from Glasgow) which could play Ballroom dance music 'in strict tempo' when on many nights the dance floor would be full of contented diners and those celebrating their special occasions but, it has all gone, and its return is overdue. Hopefully, we ex-regulars might be informed if it restarts. The staff as usual were attentive and courteous which has been the situation over the many years my wife and I have patronised the place and the public areas too are always clean. The meal last evening was delicious and the cost of the evening was very reasonable. Yes, we will return, but we would be there more often if the Saturday evening dancing recommenced; how can one romance the good lady without a dinner dance? There may exist better hotels, but not in this region!

Hotel is located within a beautiful setting. The grounds are vast with the river running past the hotel. There is plenty to do, with Dunkeld close by and the facilities on offer within the estate. Unfortunatley the hotel needs a good renovation. The chairs in the dinning room have holes in them or are well worn. I upgraded our room but was very dissapointed, the room was tiny and again it needed some tlc.

Dear Emma C
Your observations and opinions are appreciated and due to the original building being built in 1800, a few of the original bedrooms are smaller if you require a larger room on your next visit just let me know when you wish to return. We do hope we can welcome you back again.
