“Avoid the annexe”

Royal Dunkeld

Apr 24, 2008

I stayed at the Royal Dunkeld Hotel for one Saturday night in March, and had the sole use of a twin room in the annexe. This is a block of wooden chalets which look as if they had been transported from a post war holiday camp to the back yard of the hotel. The entrance to each room was down a creepy, narrow, open air passage between the rooms and a high stone wall at the back of the yard.

The door opened directly from the passageway onto a small room with twin beds, a tiny TV, and a tray of tea/coffee making kit, and a small shower room next to the entrance. The room was not centrally heated and smelled damp, and it was chilly, although it was possible to heat it up quite quickly using the adjustable electric wall heater. The sheets on the bed were clean but were not pressed and looked dishevelled. I was prepared for the room to look cheap, as I wasn't paying a fortune, but everything was a depressing orange. Cars were parked right outside the window, and I had to draw the curtains to be sure of privacy.

I had a poor night's sleep, as people were talking in the room next to mine till the early hours, and I could hear every word through the paper thin walls. A message for the guy in that room, I don't think you can have impressed those girls too much by talking about your mother for so long.

I couldn't wait to leave the room in the morning. Cooked breakfast was served in the main hotel. It was nothing special, and there was not much choice.

All I can say about my stay here, is I am glad it didn't cost more than £40, and I expect I could have done a lot better if I had gone to a local B&B.

“Royal Dunkeld”

Royal Dunkeld

I recently spent 5 nights staying in the Royal Dunkeld Hotel. I found the staff professional and discreet.
The hotel were even kind enough to lend me the use of a laptop when I was having problems with mine.
A nice hotel in beautiful surroundings.
I will be visiting again.

Located in the wooded Perthshire glens of Scotland, next to the infamous River Tay, The Royal Dunkeld is the perfect accomodation for any Scottish holiday, whether your interests are swayed towards nature, history, outdoor pursuits, walking or just relaxing in this magnificant scenery. I have recently returned from a few nights stay at the Royal Dunkeld and I am pleased to say I can see much improvement within the hotel since my last visit well over 12 months ago. The hotel has had a good year you can tell by the difference in atmosphere, its relaxed but also at the same time buzzing with guests. The hotel is looking well both inside and out. The rooms are slowly being redecorated to improve its interior and its exterior is blooming with flowers. Any of you that have stayed previously will be glad to hear the flowery wall paper is going!! Check out the website. The food is excellant, there is a good choice from bar food to restuarant food, you must try Tom's soup - homemade and hearty its the best I have tasted for a long while. Staff may be in short supply but they are helpful, service may be slow but this is not a problem due to the relaxed atmosphere, you don't mind.

“Dirty rooms”

We stayed in two annex rooms. One bed wasn't made properly and there was a lot of blue ink on one of the sheets.
The rooms were quite dirty. We complained and they came the next day to give them a good clean but many things were still dirty after this good clean.

The breakfast was good and the staff helpful.

We just dropped in to Dunkeld/Birnham on our first night in Scotland, as it seemed a characteristic, charming and historic area, without being too twee. Lucky to get a room at the Royal at reduced rates (it was apparently a slow night, in spite of being high season). Very pleasant hotel and room, the bar service was fine, but the food service a bit sloppy as reported by others. Reasonable value though.
Sat by the river and drank wine in the evening (love those long evenings!) - very beautiful.
Overall we really enjoyed it, and thought it was good value.
