This Hotel belongs to the Hart group which is part of the David Urquhart Coach tours operation and therefore those who stay here are almost exclusively those who have paid to be on a weekend or midweek coach tour. You then have to put this into the context of what you pay overall for the holiday which includes your coach travel; your full board and lodgings; the evening entertainment and your day tours.Weigh this up against what you have paid for the whole holiday and ask the question was it value for money?
In truth my wife; my mother and I stayed for a weekend holiday in April 2013 and we found the whole experience fine but nothing special.
The hotel sits high up with some excellent views overlooking the Clyde estuary across to the south shores of the Clyde. The town of Dunoon itself is a casual 10 minute stroll from the hotel but the steep bank of the hotel needs to be considered.
With three coach tours arriving at almost the same time, we found check in to be relatively straight forward. Finding your room was a bit of 'confusing fun' as the corridors can be a bit of a maze at first and the little lift almost inadequate for the numbers.
We found our two rooms to be spacious; fairly dated in terms of the furniture but comfortable and clean. The bathroom was again spacious and the large and deep bath, with ample hot water, provided the means for a good long evening soak before dinner.
Tea/Coffee making facilities were available and also a small flat screen TV. There was no hair dryer and bathroom accessories amount to one small bar of soap! The towels were fine and changed daily.
The rooms were very hot and with the radiators on full the only means of attempting to control the room temperature was to open the window or switch the radiator off altogether.
There is no question that this Hotel could benefit from a makeover here and there. It is an old Hotel and does show its age in places. However, when you pay three star hotel prices you cannot expect five star surroundings.
Meal times were clearly a challenge to the hotel. Their attempt to get the guests to arrive in the dining area at different times clearly failed and the result was some 140 guests all arriving at the same time wanting to be fed immediately. This was the same at breakfast as it was at dinner.
The request to choose your evening meal at breakfast is a common tactic to alleviate these problems and it helped to make the process more efficient. It can be off putting needing to choose your choice ( from four options) of each of the three courses some 10 hours before your going to eat it, but we understood the reasons behind the request.
The dining area was a bit noisy with so many people crammed into it and it was not really a pleasant atmosphere. The waiting staff worked very hard to take care of the your needs and the food itself was 'standard fayre' of what could be described as the meal;potatoes and two veg variety. We ate everything put in front of us and enjoyed it and so we have no real complaints.
The after dinner coffee and tea is served in the lounge area - no doubt in a bid to get everyone out of the dining area in order it can be prepared for breakfast the next day.
The evening entertainment was akin to that found in the 'Working Men's Clubs' and whilst those involved would not win any BGT shows they were acceptable. They suited the age range of the audience which must have averaged near 70 years of age! The comedian/singer on the Sunday night was a welcomed change to the previous 60/70s singers and the resultant line dancers!
In conlusion this Hotel is very much similar to all of those run by the Coach firms such as Shearings; Caledonian; Glenton and David Urquhart. You need to assess the hotel in the context of what you have paid for your holiday overall. If you do, I would be surprised if you did not conclude, as we did, that the hotel is 'fine but nothing special'.
