We haven't stayed, but had a bar lunch here during a recent day trip to Dunoon. A board outside was offering daily specials at reasonable rates, so since Dunoon isn't over-blessed with decent eating places, we decided to try it. The Lounge Bar looks like it hasn't been
decorated for years, pre-smoking ban anyway, and the upholstery on the seats had seen better days. The waitress was so uninterested, you could see she wished she was somewhere
else.
When the fish we ordered arrived, it was obviously the oven stuff you get in the local Tescos, and it came with a pretty sad looking salad. Nothing basically wrong with it, only not what you expect in an hotel. The crunch really came when we got the bill. They had charged us the a la carte prices, explaining we had ordered from the menu and hadn't asked for the specials. I had a less than friendly word with the manager, telling him I was reporting the hotel to
Trading Standards.
This place has everything that is wrong with Scottish tourism. The Hotel is situated in the prime site in Dunoon, right across from the pier, with an absolutely stunning view of the river. Unfortunately, they won't invest money in their product, and treat their customers with a complacency, that goes well beyond contempt. Do yourself a favour the next time you're in Dunoon and walk right past this dump.
