“Enjoyable times at Seven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

As locals we are often out and about walking with our dog. We are regulars at Seven because throughly enjoy the food, ambiance, service and company from the owners, Carol and Mike.
We have had many a lovely coffee, breakfast and lunch with them and they always try their best to make sure their customers enjoy their visit, nothing is too much trouble. (I wanted a Sherry on Mothers Day, they didn't have any but Mike went off to get a bottle so as to not disappoint me) We really enjoy the theme nights and have taken friends and family to Seven for a visit which they have all honestly enjoyed.
My husband and I are really glad Seven is open again after the winter, to be able sample Mikes dry sense of humour! and Carol's cooking again.
Wishing you all the best for 2013 and see you soon.

“very poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013 via mobile

After a long days camping and kayaking, we walked into town to see what grub was on offer. We narrowed it down to two places, a pub and seven. Round the corner from each other. After some consideration, we chooses seven. It was friendly and warming inside, we were severed reasonably quick, As we were the only ones in there. The food was what let this place down. My father had mussels which were 'local and fresh'. The shells were paper thin. Which indicated that they had been frozen and thawed in a microwave, the texture also indicates that. I had the lobster and shrimp dish, the lobster was overlooked and thawed in a microwave as well. And prawns were heavily seasond. But they were fresh, as showed but the dirt, sand and egg sacks on the occasional one. We left rather quick after that. Not very good.
I think the major downfall of this place is that they are trying to hard for a B and B, the one chef is given a gourmet menu to cook which he simply cannot. Thus should stick to the simple meals, like fish and chips with local fish and potatoes, fresh muscles. Tomato soup ect ect

Dear Matt,

Thank you for your feedback, and we apologise that you did not enjoy your meal. It does come as a surprise as in the past we have received nothing but positive reviews for our seafood, and many people who have sampled the dishes that you tried have since come back specifically to try them again.

I can assure you that to us, the Bistro is equally important as the B&B side of Seven and we always strive for the highest possible standards in terms of quality and service. We don’t consider it to be a gourmet menu, we simply like to cook dishes that we enjoy ourselves using the best ingredients available. Our two chefs are highly capable and experienced at producing every element on our menu, so while our high standards may not have been met on the occasion of your visit we do feel it is unfair to deem them incapable after a single meal.

Regarding the seasoning of the prawns, we do not add any salt or pepper to them during the cooking process but the dish described on the menu states that it contains garlic, ginger and chill which are quite powerful flavours in themselves.

I did find it comical that you narrowed it down to two places to eat, as there are only two eating establishments in Brighstone, but if you find yourselves in the area in future please feel free to stop by for a coffee and I would be happy to discuss the content of our menus with you etc etc

Regards Carol

“So Glad That We Found You”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

We have been visiting friends on the island and on 15th December decided to take them out to lunch. We booked a small restaurant that we had been to on previous visits but were very disappointedt to find that it had changed hands and the menu had changed drastically and what was not what we were expecting so we left. A quick decision was made and we decided to go back to 7 in Brighstone where we had been for coffee earlier in the day when we had visited the church for the Christmas Tree festival. Lunch was a huge success. My husband and I had the whitebait which was delicious and our friends had the soup and the prawn baguette. I was told that the soup was very hot and filling while the prawns were positively oozing from the baguette.
The whole experience was very pleasant. Temperature was fine when the log fire got under way and Carol and Mike were great hosts even allowing for Mikes dry sense of humour which according to Carol gets him into trouble on occasion. We shall certainly return to sample more of their delicious food on our next visit to the island which hopefully won't be too far into the New Year. My husband and I wish them both a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope that their business continues to flourish.

“Oh dear... I don't agree”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012 via mobile

I can see the owners are trying hard and the lady owner (carol, maybe?) is committed to the business but our experience has been that the place is cold and lacking atmosphere and on the couple of occasions we've had breakfast, its been cold and overpriced. And for that money what about a decent piece of toast or two? Not that one slice of thin stuff. Would it really break the bank?
Ps yes the gentleman owner can be brusque.
Hope you get it up a level as there's not much great quality going on in Brighstone as far as we've noticed on our visits.
Sorry.

Hi there,

I'm sorry that you did not enjoy your breakfast at Seven, just to address your points individually:

The last time you ate with us it was shortly after opening time, and you were the first customers in so the fire had only recently been lit and there weren't many warm bodies around to heat the place up. After a wintery walk around Brighstone you probably needed a good warm up, which you would have received if you had visited at any other time of day when the fire had time to work it's magic.

As far as the breakfast is concerned, we can only apologise for it's temperature. We always ensure that it is piping hot when leaving the kitchen, but it cools fast if the Bistro is cold. We do feel that, given the quality of ingredients used, that our breakfasts provide good value for money. Our Sausages and Bacon our locally sourced, we only use Heinz beans, our eggs are organic and free range and our bread is baked locally, delivered fresh every day. It's unusual that you received such a thin slice, as I'm normally moaning at the chef for cutting it like a doorstep!

As for Mike, I've mentioned this before but he does have a particularly dry sense of humor and is often taken the wrong way.

If you decide to eat at Seven in future, please don't hesitate to let us know if you are unsatisfied with any aspect of your meal. We prefer to sort things out there and then to make 100% sure that everyone enjoys themselves and gets good value for meal. We take all all feedback on Tripadvisor very seriously, but I think it's always better to respond in person and solve any problems immediately.

Thanks again for your review, and we hope to see you again soon.

Best regards,

Carol

“Distinctly average- disappointed :(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

Having been looking forward to a romantic dinner, my husband and I were sadly disappointed by seven. We like to eat at the higher end restaurants on the island but this is not one we are likely to rush back to.

Ambience-
The restaurant was very attractive inside, wooden floors, very clean with a log stove against the wall, however unless you were sat in front of the stove it was rather chilly.

There was a board outside advertising live music from 7pm- although they were set up to play, the musicians were having their meal at the same time as us so there was no live music. Other tables who came in after us specifically delayed ordering so that they could listen as they ate.

Food-
Starter of stuffed mushroom nice but lukewarm rather than hot, whitebait better as dish warmed.
Aubergine pasta nice but rather bland and same to be said for king prawn pasta which was very watery rather than creamy as the menu promised. Neither pasta dishes were hot, again warm... Surprising as we were not waiting long as we felt rushed a though we were blocking a table for a "better class of customer".

Service-
For the menu prices, and in a restaurant of this type we were surprised not to be offered bread but this was not a major problem.
We were rather younger than the majority of clientele in on this evening and felt very much second class citizens (we are in our 30's not teenagers!). The younger waitress was very polite, but the older gentlemen we found actually rather rude.
We were not asked how our meals were, except when he took our plates away and literally said one word. "ok?"
This happened on starter and main courses.
We were not offered black pepper or Parmesan with our pasta dishes (even Italian/pizza chains do this!) and when we requested parmesan you would think we'd asked him to fetch it from Italy!

Dessert board had only 3 items none of which was particularly imaginative and the menu board was "plonked" on the table next to us. Perhaps he didn't want us to stay!

Overall we were just disappointed- had the service been better we may have put the lack of heat (room, temperature of food, and flavour) down to a one off blip. But the service really made us feel unwanted as customers and we are unlikely to return.
Such a shame as we had been so looking forward to it and will take our money elsewhere in future. I hope they take these comments on board and should we hear things have improved from friends and family, perhaps then we may visit in the future as the place has so much potential.

I’m so disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy your evening, and really I can only apologise for not meeting expectations on this occasion. We do have high standards at Seven, and we are keen to address your points in order to put things right and ensure consistency of service in future.

The good news is that we had a new fire installed this weekend, which warms up the Bistro much more efficiently without leaking any smoke into the room – so this will help with the ambience over winter and the festive period. The musicians are friends of ours and were actually due to start at 9pm while the Fishy Friday menu was to be served from 7pm, so we apologise if the board advertising this was misleading and we will avoid similar mistakes in future.

We were particularly disappointed to hear about the issues with food, as apart from service this is the area we are most passionate about and we rarely receive anything but positive feedback. We take on board your comments about the main courses being cold, although Laura the young lady on duty has assured me that the food and plates were extremely hot when they left the kitchen, so it is possible that they went cold while you were waiting for accompaniments in the lower ambient temperature of the bistro. Therefore we apologise for the parmesan and pepper not be made available sooner.

You should not have been made to feel like second class clientele, as a small business all of our customers are equally important to us and should be made to feel special. You should have been made to feel welcome for the duration of your stay. Each of our front of house staff are trained to be friendly, helpful and welcoming at all times, but the gentleman in question is the owner, has a very dry sense of humour and should possibly be kept in back of house from now on! Again we make no excuses for this and will take steps to ensure this is not repeated.

The message I would like to leave you with, is that your experience is not representative of our usual service. We do receive a lot of positive feedback about our food and service, but it is clear that in your case we did not live up to our normal high standards. This will not happen again, and I hope that one day you will come back to us and experience Seven as it should be, living up to its full potential.

Best regards,

Carol

P.S. If you are ever passing through Brighstone again, please pop in and have a complimentary cup of coffee and try out our new fire.
