“One night stopover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

The hotel is generally clean but the bedrooms are not very airy and have toilets which are noisy but the welcome was good and the breakfast was exceptional good for one night but not for a longer break parking just outside , also the funicular railway to the beach just opposite, the hotel is very near town and theatre.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

Stayed in the Carlton last weekend. As the other reviews say the hotel is dated and a little run down. However the hotel was clean and given the price I cant really complain given the price I paid relative to prices in nearby towns.

Arrived late - but to a friendly and helpful reception. Comfortable room. Excellent breakfast next morning. Although the décor is a bit dated, this does not detract from the overall friendly atmosphere of what is a traditional hotel. It has charm and character, unlike very many modern cloned establishments.

Room Tip: Sea views at the front are great.

Always waiting for manuel to turn up ,very dated 1970 wood chip and furniture haven' t seen a t.v that big in years 1940,50 ,s light switches with a damp smell
Shower trickled ,curtain to short which didn't matter as the trickle was containable ,shower holder also had fell off
For a pit-stop if desperate fine ,but not for me definitely a two star and I Feel that's being generous ,It needs updating I heard the sister hotel was even worse
Waitress at breakfast was on the ball and gave a good service ,breakfast was ok sausages terrible, payed for two days ,left early
Have stayed in the Burstin a couple of times much nicer for the money abit Benidorm but great for people watching and clean

Room Tip: We had one of the best rooms apparently If you liked the 70,s you will love it here

Just come home after 5 days at this hotel, the coach pulled up outside,we just wanted to stay on the coach turn round and come home. From the outside the hotel looked dirty, the first room we was given was dirty, admitted we was given another room which was better, but the whole hotel needs a good clean up.The staff are really hard working, pleasant, friendly, and helpful,i feel sorry for them.

Room Tip: Can,t give any

I booked this for my parents who were travelling down from Scotland and who needed a decent night's stay before heading on to France. For this purpose I aimed for a twin room and try as I might couldn't get a Travel Lodge to come up trumps. Besides- the prices were sinful, given my parents would not be arriving till late in the evening. Oddly enough I happened on the Carlton Hotel because of a review which started with "Please do not believe all the nasty reviews about this hotel..." and it was a no brainer (didn't ever read the review- it was enough to want to try it).

So, I phoned the Carlton Hotel directly to ask about twin rooms, vacancy and price and couldn't have been more pleased with the gentle and polite manner of the hotel staff. I was asked for a name only (meaning- it was a arrangement on trust, no credit card cancellation fees to worry about), told that arriving at any time was fine and that there were plenty restaurants in the immediate vicinity for a late dinner. I was confident that it would all work out fine because the hotel was very quick to address my concerns. Besides- it was half the price of a Travel Lodge AND included breakfast!

The room was large, airy, with high ceilings and the view not half bad for a wet misty day. Most importantly the bedlinen was white and not synthetic! The bathroom was adequate if quite, quite shabby and is where the hotel could improve. Also- no toiletries which is not normally an issue except that my mum had forgotten to take shampoo with her and so was not able to make full use. Perhaps the ability to purchase some at reception would be the optimal solution.

Here is what my parents have to add: "The 'shabby chic' hotel in Folkestone. Peeling paint, wobbly floorboards but- lovely white linen bedding and- wow- table service at breakfast! So good not having to beat the starving fellow humans for your breakfast egg early in the morning! And it was the cheapest hotel we could book!"

In closing- since we too will be making the journey to France we will undoubtedly have cause to need a bed for the night. Now will not go elsewhere- shabby is OK. As long as it is clean and honest. ;)
