“Loved the Sandgate”

Sandgate Hotel

Dec 3, 2007

We have recently returned from a one night stay at the Sandgate Hotel. The hotel is remarkable and the service we received was incredible.
There were a party of us staying there for the first time . My partner was having his Xmas party at a place i think was called Vasa? very nice venue..
The overall style and cleanliness is of top quality.
I felt such a lovley vibe a bit like home from home.
I do travel a lot on my own and being a women i would feel really comfortable staying there on my own.
I have worked in the hotel industry now for over 10years and i must say that the the Sandgate is definitely on my top 10 list.
Overall i would recommend you stay at the Sandgate you will not regret it!

On behalf of myself and the rest of the group we would like to say a big thanks to all the staff at the Sandgate for such a lovley and pleasent stay.

Stayed her for one Saturday night. We had a room at the front of the hotel, which has lovely sea views. The rooms are a bit pokey but quite nice and all with modern decor. If I was being picky, the design layout was poor and both the room and bathroom would have benefitted from more space if some thought had gone into where the radiators were placed.
The problem with the rooms at the front is the noise. Mainly traffic but also a bit of shouting and carrying on.
Breakfast in the morning was pretty poor. The service was bad. There seemed to be at least three staff serving about 20 people, but they were just not organised and we waited ages for coffee and then had to wait for milk, pepper, water and so on. When the cooked breakfast came, it was disappointing. Eggs either overcooked or undercooked. Bacon all undercooked. Sausages all burnt. Need to do better.

“Super place, but awful service!”

We booked this hotel as it looked great from the reviews and planned to use it for a seaside getaway!

The hotel is really lovely and has been decorated with a very chic touch. However, the organisation and general level of service is really bad. We arrived at 4.30pm hoping to check - in straight away in order to get ready for a night out with my brother and his girlfriend. At this point we were told that our room would not be ready as they were busy!!! We were given a small single room (cupboard!) for the 4 of us to get ready in, we are a close family but not that close.

We were finally provided with a room and suprise suprise they tried to put all 4 of us in together, even though we booked 2 double rooms. It took another heated discussion for us to finally get everything sorted and be put in separate rooms.

It is a shame that the organisation of this hotel let it down, as it is a great find on the coast and has gorgeous views of the sea.

“Lovely hotel, but noise problems at weekend”

Sandgate Hotel

Jul 13, 2007

We really liked the decor, staff and fantastic sea views - but left feeling a bit confused after staying Sat / Sun for a birthday celebration. The room was lovely and the staff very sweet and helpful, but I'd have difficulty bringing myself to book another weekend here if I expected a restful stay.

The hotel has a nightclub in the basement and on Saturday night we rang reception to ask how long the thumpy music would carry on. "Until 1am" they said, "It's just the bass - it travels up the walls". They said they'd ask if it could be turned down. The music stopped immediately - result! But it made us wonder why a hotel in a quiet little town, with a clientele apparently of of older people, couples and families with kids, would have a loud club in the basement disturbing people even 3 floors above (as we were).

We ate my birthday meal in the restaurant on Sunday night but they were still only serving Sunday lunches - roasts etc. No sign of the fresh seafood mentioned in the brochure. By 9pm we were the only 2 left in the restaurant, but to be fair it seemed busy the night before. The food was ok, but with no crackling / stuffing etc. not very exciting. The dessert menu was laminated like those you get in Indian restaurants, with odd 'Italian' creations all fresh from the freezer. We asked about sorbets but were told "There aren't any - it's really hot in the kitchen and they've melted."

On leaving - having really enjoyed the stay, we paid the bill & I asked the receptionist if there was generally some noise on Fri & Sat nights. She didn't get a chance to answer - a woman I assume to be the owner came over and launched into a defensive tirade. I stopped her and pointed out that I wasn't actually making a complaint, we'd had a very satisfactory response about the noise we'd heard from inside the building & I only wanted to find out if this was the norm for weekends. I was still attempting to be polite. She claimed that if it was the same room complaining every week then she'd just not book out that room, but it wasn't, and no-one other than us had complained that weekend. She appeared to be saying that she got complaints from all over the hotel, but by some unpredictable mystic force the problem is limited to one room each time. Finally, she also told me that they did have 'events' every weekend.

It felt really confusing to walk away on a sour note, as it's a great place. Guess I'd go back for a stay Sun-Thurs, but wouldn't risk the weekend, and I wouldn't eat there again.

“Great Little Place”

Just spent a great weekend with my sisters and our mum at this superb modern Hotel (not a bit of chintz in sight). Recently been taken over by new owners, who could not do enough to ensure that we had a comfortable, enjoyable stay.
The room was lovely, with a great view over the sea from the balcony ( would be a great place to sit in the summer). The Dining room and Bar area were very pleasent and the food was great.
Will certainly go back soon.
