We really liked the decor, staff and fantastic sea views - but left feeling a bit confused after staying Sat / Sun for a birthday celebration. The room was lovely and the staff very sweet and helpful, but I'd have difficulty bringing myself to book another weekend here if I expected a restful stay.
The hotel has a nightclub in the basement and on Saturday night we rang reception to ask how long the thumpy music would carry on. "Until 1am" they said, "It's just the bass - it travels up the walls". They said they'd ask if it could be turned down. The music stopped immediately - result! But it made us wonder why a hotel in a quiet little town, with a clientele apparently of of older people, couples and families with kids, would have a loud club in the basement disturbing people even 3 floors above (as we were).
We ate my birthday meal in the restaurant on Sunday night but they were still only serving Sunday lunches - roasts etc. No sign of the fresh seafood mentioned in the brochure. By 9pm we were the only 2 left in the restaurant, but to be fair it seemed busy the night before. The food was ok, but with no crackling / stuffing etc. not very exciting. The dessert menu was laminated like those you get in Indian restaurants, with odd 'Italian' creations all fresh from the freezer. We asked about sorbets but were told "There aren't any - it's really hot in the kitchen and they've melted."
On leaving - having really enjoyed the stay, we paid the bill & I asked the receptionist if there was generally some noise on Fri & Sat nights. She didn't get a chance to answer - a woman I assume to be the owner came over and launched into a defensive tirade. I stopped her and pointed out that I wasn't actually making a complaint, we'd had a very satisfactory response about the noise we'd heard from inside the building & I only wanted to find out if this was the norm for weekends. I was still attempting to be polite. She claimed that if it was the same room complaining every week then she'd just not book out that room, but it wasn't, and no-one other than us had complained that weekend. She appeared to be saying that she got complaints from all over the hotel, but by some unpredictable mystic force the problem is limited to one room each time. Finally, she also told me that they did have 'events' every weekend.
It felt really confusing to walk away on a sour note, as it's a great place. Guess I'd go back for a stay Sun-Thurs, but wouldn't risk the weekend, and I wouldn't eat there again.
