“In the middle of no-where - excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

I stayed here because a friend was getting married nearby. They were very accommodating about early book in. The room was very well furnished, and very well lit. It was clean. It was quite noisy with doors banging, but that settled down about midnight. I only stayed there for about four hours, so I can't comment much on anything else...

The location was brilliant - in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately that meant I didn't have vodafone reception, but you can't win everything.
Streetcars from Manchester, and Home James were very efficient taxis.

We stopped in because we fancied a bite to eat on a Saturday afternoon. We were all very pleased with the meals we ordered. The portion sizes are larger than we expected and delicious too.
A previous reviewer noted that the service is a bit slow however we found that the starters were so large that we appreciated some extra time to let them settle on our stomachs.
In conclusion...we will keep coming back because the food and the service are excellent. The place is inviting and located in a picturesque area of the Pennines

We stayed here from 28 - 31 December 2012 and had a fantastic break away from it all. We parked the car on arrival & didn't get in it again until we left. The perfect location for walkers - just step outside and you can walk in any direction, straight onto the moors. The landlord & landlady were very friendly, with a warm welcome & we felt at home straight away.
The bedroom was superb, huge, spotless & comfortable, and what joy, a luxurious bath to soak in after a long walk. Facilities were immaculately clean & the whole pub was kept very warm - in fact we were some times too hot!
Breakfast served in the conservatory was whatever you fancied, from full English to kippers; with home-made sweet black pudding hand made by the landlord who was a butcher in his other life. Hence the luscious steaks & pies. We also had chance to sample the Turkish cuisine which was excellent.
There are camping and caravan facilities also available, several in use during this Christmas break.
Black Sheep ale on tap, and wine sold in litre bottles - what more could you ask for?
We asked about family sized rooms and were shown a huge room easily accommodated a double & single bed, with room for a travel cot too.
The only down side is that it didn't stop raining all the time we were there!
We definitely hope to return.

Such a shame. Exceptionally slow service (despite being pretty empty), when the food eventually came it was cold, the veg overcooked in the microwave, disorganised staff and the lady who purported to be the owner exceptionally rude. Never seen anything like it before. Very dissapointing experience. Plenty of fantastic alternatives. Would never go again.

We booked a night's stay as we were going to a wedding at the Saddleworth Hotel, about 2 miles away and approx £100 more for double B&B. So pleased we did. Bev arranged an early check in so we could do so before the wedding and gave us a key in case we came back late.
The room was spotless, well appointed, beautifully decorated and with views over the moor.
We came back from the wedding earlier than expected and in time to enjoy a beer in the bar before turning in to a bed that was so comfortable that we overslept in the morning.
Breakfast was served in the conservatory - more stunning views and lovely quality full English with all the trimmings and coffee top ups.
We will certainly be back and will recommend Simon and Bev's hospitality to family and friends.

We have passed the Carriage House many times over the years on our way to Manchester Airport, Uppermill and Oldham, and recently called in for the first time for Saturday lunch. We sat in the conservatory and enjoyed the superb views of the moors. The owners were helpful and friendly. The menu was varied, with an international flavour and the bar had a good variety of wines and beers. The freshly cooked meals were excellent. Will add the Carriage House to our list of favourites around Huddersfield.

Room Tip: A great refreshment point for walks over Marsden Moor and the surrrounding area.
