“Truly Transported.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We visited Watchet in November 2012 for a week's stay in a cottage. The W.S.R. has a station in the town and so,on a rainy Sunday,we used it to take a trip to Minehead. What a wonderful journey through beautiful countryside on a warm train run by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. The return was just as much fun and we vowed to use the service again before we left. We were true to our word and travelled to Dunster Castle on it on the Tuesday,Bishop's Lydeard on the Wednesday and Blue Anchor on the Thursday !
The stations are well run, beautifully kept and clearly much loved by volunteers, locals and tourists alike. This experience is an absolute joy and certainly not to be missed.

“A must-do for visitors and residents!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

A fantastic way to travel. Beautiful stations, lovely old trains and the never ending views of the country are unbelievable. Set time aside to do the full trip, it's one of the best ways to see England -- passing through the hills, along the country and right by the sea. My boyfriend (who I brought and was visiting the SW for the first time) loves trains but was blown away by the experience -- everything from the little ticket booth at Lydeard to the gorgeous station and turntable at Minehead will have you smiling.

“A Very Splendid Day Out in Somerset”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

There is only one other place in Somerset which comes close to the West Somerset Railway......and that is the East Somerset Railway!

The experience of riding a preserved steam railway from Bishop's Lydeard all the way to Minehead and return, with a stop off at Watchet Harbour, is a very good way of using one or even two of your holidays in Somerset!

We have experienced this on several occasions and all weathers. It never disappoints us, but to do it on a gala day is even more special. Watch out for these on their web site or just apply for membership and get the details in their Newsletters or Magazine. Membership saves on the price of tickets considerably.

“One of the longest steam railways we have been on”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

It was lovely to have a train journey that had a few stations you could get off at and have a look around. The day we went on the west somerset railway it was a lovely sunny day and when we arrived in Minehead we had fish & chips by the beach and had a nice walk to the lifeboat station. We had a refreshing drink at the pub and got on the train for our return journey back to Bishops Lydeard. We had got off at Watchet and walked round the harbour there earlier in the day. We love steam railways with the nostalgia and the history behind them, and we think this is one of the best we have been to so far.

“Wonderful way to have dinner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

We travelled on the Quantock Belle first class dining train one evening in August 2012 and found it to be a truly unique and a very enjoyable experience.

Even before we boarded the train, one of the managers approached us on the platform with a really friendly welcome and showed us which carriage to join once the train pulled round to the departure platform.

We had a restaurant quality meal on the slow leg from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead with a large smoked salmon starter, a Mediterranean chicken for main course and lemon meringue tart for pudding.

The service, we think mostly by volunteers, was efficient and pleasant. They really did try to make it a special occasion. It’s not easy carrying plates of hot food in a moving railway carriage.

It was one of the best evenings of the summer and we had a super view of Dunster Castle on the way to Minehead. We also saw herons, what seemed to the thousands of crows circling to roost and a deer jumping through the wheat in a field by the side of the track.

Every time we saw people by the side of the track they waved and smiled... it was really nostalgic.

When we arrived at Minehead and had time to stroll down to the front, there was a magnificent twilight.

The station with the Quantock Belle in steam moving up and down the tracks was really atmospheric.

We were served with cheese and coffee on the return journey from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard.

At Watchet, there was a whole crowd of well-wishers by the side of the track who cheered and cheered as the Quantock Belle steamed through and whistled in acknowledgement.

What we really liked about the whole experience was that the welcome was warm, the food was good, the service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was of the glory days of steam railways.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and tremendously good value for money.

What we would have liked was the option to do the same trip travelling from and back to Minehead.
