“Marvellous food, beautiful decor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

We enjoyed lunch here last week. Superb set menu - great choice I thought and very good price. Only negative was that we were over-charged and there was a mix of set menu prices and a la carte on our bill. Do check your bill especially if one person has the set menu and the other has the a la carte. This isn't the first time it has happened to us.
Dining room is stunning.

We arrived and the area had been struck with a power cut. However, food was still produced (limited menu) and was delicious. The dining room itself is worth a visit - some beautiful art work as well. The room was compact and very clean but it was cold and we struggled to get the bathroom warm at all. At night time we could here fellow guests moving through the corridor so sound proofing wasn't great

We stayed here with it being cheapest hotel available for one mid week night, dinner was also a bargain at £18.50 for 3 courses.
Rooms comfortable, but my room was accessible room and bathroom had very small sink and was too cold in morning for shower, it really was freezing in bathroom even though I left door open to try and allow get from room in.
Dinner was nice, staff were very friendly and attentive, until breakfast !
Breakfast at 7, we needed to be away by 7:45 if possible, we were not the first in but was 10 past before juice arrived, 20 past before tea/coffee and took until 7:50 to have breakfast ! On the plus side the quality of cooked breakfast was excellent.
Paying bill was a bit confusing, 2 of us, 2 rooms and 2 dinners, dinner was overcharged with prices from a la carte menu and was soon rectified and once paid we got a bill for another room, the staff did seem confused.
Would I go back, yes I would, and I would travel from Basingstoke / Andover to stay here, bet its lovely in the summer.

We returned to the Carnarvon Arms again, having eaten there on a number of occasions.

There is nothing which is too much trouble, the staff are just lovely.

We have stuff like Pea and Ham Soup, Rillettes of Pork, Smoked Mackerel and Horseradish

Followed by Venison, Bangers and Mash, Goujons of Haddock and exquisite triple fried chips, and beautiful fish pie with fresh peas.

Puddings like Creme Brullee were there but I had rice pudding, well to die for does not quite cover it!

A fruit clafoutis, not many people know how to serve that dish well but they do!

CHEF DE CUISINE Andrew Bennett did us proud, and it is not an extortionate price, like some Gastro Pubs.

But then, this place is not really a pub anymore, it is a quality reliable consistent Restaurant.

Oh and the icing on the cake was that as we were leaving, the man himself, Marco Pierre White was arriving, maybe the staff did not know and he was checking up, well Marco, you have nothing to worry about at all in my opinion.

You would expect that MPW would have a pub with fine food - fantastic !! Small but beautiful rooms a little like Hotel du Vin but not quite as grand. Excellent value - treat yourself but ask for a room with a bath - I was disappointed to only get a shower ...why o why do hotels think this is a good idea?

Room Tip: Ask for a bath!

The Carnarvon rooms were small but perfectly formed with a lovely ensuite. The communal areas for the rooms were quite tatty and were in desperate need of renovating. There was a large hole in the carpet of the corridor.
The dining menu in the restaurant was excellent as was the breakfast we had each day.
Overall we had a lovely restful stay.

A lovely one night stay. Staff were a little bit disorganised at times but so polite & helpful, dedicated to the task, it did nothing to spoil the stay......sort of added to the charm of the place!
Comfortable, clean small room (single booked - 112)......very comfortable double bed with top quality bedding.
The fish pie was second to none....excellent!
I would happily stay here again.....highly recommend.
