“Marco Pierre White top class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

The hotel is well positioned with ample parking. Pleasant bar area and very friendly staff. Lovely rooms with tea and coffee facilities. The best thing however is the food. Very reasonably priced fine dining and good sized portions make it worth staying at the hotel for the dining experience alone. The breakfast certainly didn't disappoint either. The bar is also reasonably priced so all in all, a great place to stay.

Spent a night here to experience the restaurant and was very pleasantly surprised by the lovely accommodation added to this country pub/restaurant belonging to Marco Pierre White. Food was excellent and accommodation very reasonably priced. Unfortunately for us, Downton Abbey (Highclere Castle) was closed to visitors both days. Just have to go back another time. A little far from Australia though!

Room Tip: Rooms are smallish, but nicely furnished, bathroom small but adequate.

Thank you for your review.

Australia is a little far to come back, however, it's worth it to see Highclere Castle.

Let us know if you’re coming back and we will ensure you get tickets to go!

Look out for our boss on television in Australia soon, he has just finished filming Master Chef The Professionals!

We booked this online and were delighted that we could stay so close to Highclere Castle
for our morning tour. This was our first year's anniversary. Driving from Newbury Town center the surrounding country was exactly as you think of the georgous countryside of the English aristocracy. We drove up to find a picturesque inn with a 'Pierre Marco White' restaurant. We did not know of Pierre Marco White until my husband's children explained his reputation in the UK. Reception is a very dark corner of the bar. We were told that a reservation was necessary to dine at the on-site restaurant. We did this and were then escorted to our room. The room itself was very small, the bathroom even smaller. The shower was so small, it was difficult to raise your arms above your head without hitting the walls. Rooms were very clean and appropriately outfitted. The mattress was sinking and very uncomfortable and the pillows were in great need of replacement. We both slept very poorly that evening.
Now, to the restaurant. I have never had such an experience at the expense of a server . Our waitress was very impressed with herself. Her service was not what one expects at a restaurant of that caliber. The food was very good, with a lovely presentation. Our server's attitude was so bad that my husband and I sat for twenty minutes after dinner waiting for a dessert and coffee menu. My husband had to get up to look for someone to bring coffee.
The breakfast menu was impressive to say the very least, and it was delicious. Again, the service was an issue. Breakfast was included with the room making this a very good value.
We wanted to be close to Highclere Abbey so this was the place to stay. Don't look for amenities, just the bare basics, and wilst clean, the bed, the pillows were tired-like us after a poor night's sleep at the Carnarvon Arms. Too bad- it has such great potential.

Room Tip: We did not see any other rooms- stay away from #9.

We booked this trip with Travelzoo for a really good price so if it wasn't up to much we hadn't lost a lot but what a brilliant little hotel this turned out to be.

We arrived a little early for check in and the staff were getting ready for a lunch party but they made us very welcome and supplied coffee and delicious mince pies with a cheery smile, and the friendly and efficient service continued throughout our overnight stay. Dinner in Whistles restaurant was absolutely delicious as you would expect from a Marco Pierre White restaurant, although they were full the cheerful staff were attentive and friendly, our party were the last to leave the restaurant and, excluding the chef Andrew and Sam the Manager, the bar but at no time did we feel we were holding them up, in fact we had a lovely chat with them. Breakfast the next morning was good, cooked to order not Buffett and again no rush to get us out of the restaurant. The rooms were well appointed, clean and comfortable, we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and restaurant and will certainly stay there again.

I stayed here overnight on business and had high expectation as I have had experience of several Marco Pierre White restaurants. Sadly this fell way below my expectations.
Firstly the pub area which also doubles as the reception area for the hotel is a very dark and mysterious atmosphere with cases of animals and birds (stuffed and preserved) everywhere and with stag heads and deer horns attached to bare skulls adorning the upper walls. This created a very eerie atmosphere, if you like that sort of thing.
The carpets in the hallway leading to my bedroom was worn through and not what I would have expected. My room however was clean and reasonably decorated with a double bed and good quality linen and towels. The bed however was not at all comfortable. I presume that it was memory foam or something.
I ventured to the restaurant but found the staff not very welcoming and two of them serving several tables. I heard a couple ask if their food was on is way as they were waiting longer than expected. I chose at this stage to drive to Newbury and found a very pleasant restaurant.
My further disappointment was that the Wi-Fi did not function in my bedroom or the bar area. There was a very weak signal in the corridor adjacent to the toilets. When I inquired at the bar I was told that it was broken and not even offered an apology.
This hotel/restaurant is using Marco Pierre's name and reputation to suggest a higher quality than it actually provides.
I had a similar bad experience at Marcos in Chelsea. If Marco is not careful his name will be associated with cheap and awful.
I will certainly not stay here again.

I took my Mum here for lunch and had a lovely experience. Unfortunately the restaurant was not very busy so the atmosphere did lack somewhat but the food and service were superb. Menu is excellent, albeit on the pricey side. However, that is what one expects from a Marco Pierre White establishment.

We booked a couple of days here via one of the deals offered on line. For the price we paid it was excellent.
As long as you remember it is an "Inn" & not a top rate hotel, you will be fine.

The deal included dinner(s) which we upgraded. The service was ok but the food quality was very good.

Having said the service wasn't brilliant, it was relaxed & informal. All in all a very good deal.

Room Tip: rooms on the front are quieter.
