“Lovely Hotel 10 minutes from "Downton Abbey"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

We stayed in the Vineyard hotel two nights in August because we wanted to visit Highclere Castle, where Downton Abbey is filmed. A Relais & Chateaux hotel, the Vineyard is very well appointed and a comfortable, relaxing place to stay. Our room was huge, and we had a small patio outside on a beautiful lawn. The free wifi worked well, and the food was good at breakfast and in the restaurant and bar at dinner. I enjoyed having a large walk-in closet with extra outlets (since in the UK you can't have electrical outlets in the bathroom except for shavers). We called for coffee in the room both mornings, and it was delivered promptly with small pastries at no extra charge (breakfast was included in our room rate). The hotel is about 10 minutes drive to Highclere Castle.

The room we stayed in was lovely; a delux suite which was very comfortable. Things started to go wrong over dinner in the restaurant. If you're looking for an intimate dinner for two, this isn't the place. We were so close to the tables either side of us I felt like we should be dining together. Add to this an 18month old having dinner with his parents until 10:30 in a restaurant where the acoustics only served to amplify his presence and it wasn't altogether a dining extravaganza which the price would have led us to believe. I can only liken it to having dinner at Butlins.
We chose the 7 course taster menu, which, all credit to the kitchen, they adapted to my request to change one course. The wine came as a sip-full in each glass, which, whilst I appreciate there were two glasses with each course; didn't really serve to add to the experience. The sommelier (albeit a trainee) introduced the wines, pretty much, by reading the labels. He was difficult to hear due to the aforementioned acoustics and there was no explanation as to why each of those wines was chosen to compliment that course. We never were introduced to the head sommelier...something I would have anticipated had I been overseeing a wine tasting dinner.
Breakfast the next morning was a shambles; we were shown to our table and then forgotten. The staff seemed to flit about between all tables with no sense of organisation, focus or attention being paid to specific tables. For the second morning running people around us had to ask for toast and or their cappuccino multiple times - we had to ask the restaurant manager if we could perhaps peruse the menu - let alone order anything.
So in summary - the room was great, the dining room was a shambles and if the receptionist had bothered to ask me if I'd enjoyed my stay as we checked out, I would have pointed this all out to her at the time.

Room Tip: the delux suite we stayed in was luxurious.

“Disappointed with a dented bank balance”

Thank you for your feedback on TripAdvisor which is greatly appreciated.

A very dissapointing review indeed which is not a true reflection of what The Vineyard is about and what we strive to deliver, and for that I apologise.

Please do drop me a line should your travels bring you back to Newbury.

Kind regards

I have now stayed here several times and wouldn't hesitate in coming back. From the welcome we receive on check in by the receptionist to the spa facilities and restaurant. Each area of the hotel has never disappointed us. The last occasion we arrived to find that we had been given an upgrade to a beautiful room. The decoration and comfort that it offered was fabulous and we thoroughly enjoyed the stay. We also have taken part in wine tasting events and gourmet dinners and can honestly say that the food was exquisite and the wine matching an interesting and enjoyable experience. We had one quibble during our last stay with room service but that was rectified very quickly. Well done to all staff, I have stayed in many fine hotels but my favourite is the Vineyard as we have found that they tick so many boxes on our 'need' list. My needs were a large, clean and pretty room, hopefully with a view. A good selection of spa pampering treatments, great food and great wine followed by a good nights sleep. The Vineyard ticked every box. Hopefully we will return again soon!

Venue booked for global HR conference as well as team build created the ambience for both objectives as well as fine dinner. Gym and Jacuzzi provided early morning great starts. Rooms and courtyard and general countryside setting made for pleasing experience during first UK visit.

Room Tip: The road running past the front of the hotel can become a bit busy for the country side

Overall very good, but not as good as it should have been for the price.
When we arrived there were piles of dirty dishes all along the corridor as we went to our room.
The room was very nice and spacious. The toiletries were not replaced during the day as emptied, all of these are minor niggles, our main concern was the evening meal.
The evening meal was the core of our visit, and for a place that markets itself on wine we were expecting wines paired to the meal.
The meal selected was the preset tasting menu, and a wine flight to match.
Sadly, we came away feeling like we had been given the left over open wines rather than wines to match the courses. This was because in at least 2 cases we had the very last dregs from the bottle and in every case the wine did not seem to go with the course.
I should say for context that we often go for associated wine flights at comparable establishments.
Very good and attentive staff - would visit again - but would choose our own wine next time.

Having wanted to come here for some time we booked on one of their packaged deals including room, dinner, wines, breakfast and spa facilities.
There were many highlights but many detractions from what a hotel/restaurant at this level should be delivering.
Firstly we were showed to our rooms and considering there was a wedding going on we were made to feel welcome in an efficient manner.
Our room was absolutely lovely, clean, very well appointed and comfortable.
The spa was very well maintained and comfortable, it could be bigger given the size of the hotel but still very welcome.
Now to the average. Upon coming down for dinner we decided to sit near an open window, from this point on the service we received was frankly poor. We were left without a pre dinner drinks menu and just asked if we knew what we would like to drink. We were delivered food menus after another 5 minutes and it was explained to us. We advised the package we were staying on and they did not seem to understand, I checked and it is still a live package. The waiter took another 5 minutes or so to come back and confirm.
We went through to the restaurant and there was a lovely ambience here. Again though service was patchy. We were again told we were having a different level of menu to the one we were actually having, again a lack of understanding.
Our first wine was delivered, given we were having a wine matching tasting menu, you would expect the sommelier and kitchen to be in kilter, we had the wine for around 10 minutes before the food was delivered.
The food was placed in front of us, and that was it, no explanation of what was in front of us or anything(the norm at this standard of restaurant). Once one of the waiters reappeared I asked what we were having. Same with the second course. From the third course on, both the timings and delivery were much better.
A good night in a very comfortable room.
Breakfast, where to begin. damp napkins, no organisation, no menu or order taking. This was below par and they weren't very busy. On speaking to a member of the team he advised that the service hadn't been the best, I agreed and said maybe due to the wedding, he replied not but that 4 people were on holiday, not good enough.
Our experience was that there were around 4 serving staff working very hard but given no direction. There were 3 managers present but not actually delivering very much at all.
Such a shame as we were really looking forward to this treat.
I have sent them correspondence in lieu of the above and sent a chaser but my queries have gone unanswered to date, not even acknowledged.

This is a very disappointing review indeed and I am surprised it has been posted in view of the fact that the Restaurant and Wine Director had made contact with you prior to the posting of this review.

Took my grandma for afternoon yea on bank holiday Monday and we had a very enjoyable afternoon. The coffee (which is blended by the head chef) was very tasty and the sandwiches and cakes were very good. We sat outside by the beautiful pond and enjoyed the lovely weather. The one downside was the pesky wasps but the hotel can't be blamed for those! The service was great and the staff were very attentive.
